Careers

Welcome! It’s never too early for students to start thinking about career ideas, researching options, developing a career action plan, or simply having a discussion with their Careers Coordinator.

Seeing their Career Coordinator early in the year is important to ensure they can get organised early and are able to start making links with local employers.

We encourage all students and parents to please read this career news section each month and to explore the Kilbreda Careers Website HERE to ensure you keep up-to-date with upcoming career events and key dates.

If you have a child in Year 12, then it is essential that they discuss their options with the key people in their life as soon as possible. As the Careers Coordinator, I am most privileged to interview every Year 12 student throughout the year to guide them, with any future pathway questions.

Parents – School to Work Resources

Supporting your child in preparing for the world of work after school can be a challenge. Casualisation and globalisation of the workforce, and automation and rapid advances in technology will all have an impact in your child’s navigation of the world of work.

The Australian Government has developed resources to support parents through the 'Future Ready Career Education' portal. To access the resources, visit https://schooltowork.dese.gov.au/

It is important to note that around 80% of all job vacancies aren’t advertised, so it is crucial that students market themselves to businesses with an excellent resume and cover letter.

They need to ensure they tell as many people as possible that they are looking for work as often employers rely on ‘word of mouth’ to recruit for their positions.

Job seeking resources

For excellent job seeking tips, and resume/cover letter templates, we encourage students to check out the resources at the following two websites:

Skillsroad - www.skillsroad.com.au

Youth Central - www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au

Rights and Responsibilities

This is a great resource to ensure your child knows their rights and responsibilities when starting a new job - www.fairwork.gov.au

Tax File Number (TFN

If a student does not have a TFN, they will need to apply for one via the Australian Tax Office - www.ato.gov.au

Job Options

We also recommend checking the job options at the ‘Explore Careers’ website - https://explorecareers.com.au/
