Meet the STEM Leaders -

Part 1

This year we are very privileged to have four incredible STEM leaders: Alex Comey, Celina Gledhill, Emily Corbitt and Grace Corbitt. They are super passionate about promoting STEM subjects at the College. You can find out a little more about each student on this page and the Science page.

Alexandra Comey

Portfolio: I’m the T in STEM (Technology)!

STEM subjects I am studying this year: Applied Computing; Data Analytics

Favourite STEM moment: Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship course at Monash University is by far my favourite one!

Why I think STEM is important: STEM is something that is seen in every field of work. To me it is beyond interesting constantly learning and being able to explore the different places that STEM can be incorporated into. Our current world is already heavily reliant on technology, and the industry is moving super quickly and is always fast paced and interesting. There are so many different fields inside of STEM subjects and they will be so important in the future.

My Goal for this leadership role: To provide as many opportunities as possible for STEM workshops both inside and outside of school, such as the WISE program at Monash University.

STEM subjects I am studying this year: Applied Computing; Data Analytics, Physics, Mathematics Methods

Favourite STEM moments: Monash University WISE program and building and programming robots in 'Techbots'.

Why I think STEM is important: To explore and learn more about our universe and allowing humanity to learn how to cure diseases and viruses.

My Goal for this Leadership role:  I want to promote women in STEM and give other students an opportunity to build and program things.

Year 7 to 9 'Techbots 2.0'

If students are interested in working with these fabulous STEM Leaders to develop technology skills in a fun workshop environment, then 'Techbots 2.0' may be a club they are interested in.

This year we will be offering a variety of specialist STEM workshops in our newly revamped STEM Room such as 3D printing, green screening, programming Microbits v.2 and, of course, the highly anticipated RobotSumo competition, to name a few. We encourage our students to check the Daily Bulletin on SIMON for details of the workshops and to sign up quickly so they don’t miss out!

Year 7 Update

Our Year 7 students have well and truly settled in. After a couple of lessons of a ‘getting to know your laptop and the Kilbreda systems’ they are now embarking on their Adobe Photoshop journey. Students are learning how to use gradients, brushes, shapes, text and filters to create original works of art. Soon we will be heading into the STEM Room to use the green screen to combine photos.

Year 8 Update

Throughout Semester 1, Year 8 classes are taking it in turns to work in the new STEM Room with the Edison Robots. They are learning how to program movement, LED (lights) and sounds while using their LEGO engineering skills to build their own original robots. When not working on the robots, students have begun to develop their Excel spreadsheet skills completing the ever-popular 'Harry Plotter' spreadsheet tasks!
