NUMERACY in Year Three/Four

In Mathematics, the Year Three/Four students have been focusing on Measurement and Geometry. Last week we were hands on; using our rulers to measure objects around the room, comparing the sizes of different objects and learning how to convert measurements from centimetres to millimetres. 

This week we are investigation perimeter and area; learning how to calculate the perimeter and area of rectangles and squares, understanding what the terms area and perimeter mean, and applying our knowledge to real life scenarios where we might need to calculate the area and perimeter.

Our Mathematics lessons are designed around the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model and students rotate in their groups through a range of activities over the week. Lessons begin with a whole class “Tune In’ where skills and concepts are explicitly taught. The students then complete a rotational activity to practice the concept or skill. Each week, students will complete:

• Mathletics on the iPad, in which they practice the skills being taught
• Group Work, in which they play a game or complete group tasks
• Individual Work, in which the work is differentiated to support and extend the capabilities of each student
• Teacher Focus, in which students are explicitly taught to their point of need

Miss Tilley, Mrs Rowe and Miss Wright are so proud of the work being completed in mathematics. The students have engaged with the curriculum, and in particular the hands-on activities that we have offered.

SPECIALIST TIMETABLE

Please note the following changes to the specialist timetable throughout our swimming week. The Grade Threes all attend swimming together leaving school at 12.45 and the Grade Fours all attend swimming together leaving school at 11:45am.
