Maths in Year Two!

So far this term in Year Two we have been exploring topics from Number and Algebra and Measurement and Geometry. We have been building upon our students' existing knowledge of pure number, so that they may utilise this knowledge to undertake further problem solving and applied challenges.

In Number and Algebra, students have been applying their number sense and strategies for counting and representing numbers and explore the properties of numbers. We have been focussing on the proficiency of Fluency with students working at developing skills in accurately recalling factual knowledge and concepts readily.

Students have enjoyed completing a lot of hands on activities such as playing race to 120, drawing cards to make the biggest number and building MAB castles.

In Measurement and Geometry, students have been developing their understanding of size, shape and movement of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. They are learning about the features of these shapes and are able to sort and identify such shapes based on these observable features. They have investigated the properties and applied their understanding of them to define, compare and construct figures and objects.

Students have enjoyed completing a range of activities such as going on a shape hunt around the school, completing their own shape book, playing shape bingo, constructing 3D shapes and making shape posters.

Take Home Readers

As part of InitiaLit-2, students have free-choice of short and extended chapter books to take home and read. Year Two students are able to choose two readers from school to take home and read nightly. Students in Year Two are also free to choose books from home to read each night if they wish. We urge families to read daily to help support the learning that is happening within the classroom.

Students who choose their readers on a Monday are required to return them on Friday the same week.
