Making Movies

There's no business like show business!

On Friday, February 26,  the Year 11 and Year 12 Media classes were very fortunate to have author and screenwriter,  Joshua Tyler,  visit their classes to conduct a storytelling workshop.

Joshua shared his extensive film and TV industry knowledge and spoke about his creative practice. It was particularly inspiring to hear about the learning challenges Josh himself faced as a student, and how the creative arts were his place of refuge, inspiration and success as a young person.

As our Year 12 students are in the development stage of their School Assessed Task (SAT), Joshua’s workshop about storytelling and writing for the screen was perfect timing to help inspire them with their own stories.

Joshua co-wrote Top End Wedding with Miranda Tapsell.  This film premièred at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and was distributed by Universal, becoming the second highest-grossing Australian film of 2019.  Additionally, Top End Wedding was nominated for Best Film at the AACTA Awards and is currently screened on Netflix - we highly recommend a viewing! Joshua and Miranda also co-wrote the beautifully entertaining children's picture book,  Aunty’s Wedding (Allen & Unwin) - must-read!

On behalf of BSC and all the students who so enjoyed his presentation, we thank Josh for helping to inspire the next generation of Australian storytellers.

It was quite cool to see and hear from someone with experience in the film industry, sharing their knowledge and experience of collaboration. From the process of writing a script with others, to pitching an idea to executives, I certainly learned a lot. My biggest take-away was making sure to focus on developing my own skills instead of focusing on the idea of 'making it' or being popular. I'm glad I could attend!

I have been inspired a lot by this workshop with Josh, as it allowed me to think about how I will develop my short film for my Media SAT.

I will explore deeper into my characters’ development and try connecting different ideas and inspiration from normal, ‘everyday’ things around me. I enjoy it!

From Josh’s workshop I learned how much work you need to put in to make just one film.

I also learned that you need so many people to create an idea that your happy with. Josh also showed me how to get creative and think of an idea using basic principles of film.
