New Staff Profile

Mr Steve Emmett

I have spent the last 16 years at Brighton Grammar, teaching art, visual communication design, product design and technology (woodcraft). I held a number of different roles there, including Head of Art, Acting Head of Faculty – Creative and Performing Arts, Teacher in Charge of Armstrong House, and House Tutor. I was also involved with the sports program, being year 9 Tennis co-ordinator, Teacher in Charge of Field Events for Athletics, and Teacher in Charge of Year 9 Rugby. I also participated in a number of camps such as Marine Biology at Lizard Island, SCUBA diving in Port Phillip Bay, and Community Service at the Martyrs’ School in Papua New Guinea building pews for their Chapel, to name a few. I also organised and ran an Art Tour to New York City in 2016; something I’m very keen to do again at Mazenod if the boys are interested in going. I have also done work for VCAA, doing folio reviewing for Art and marking exam papers for Art and Product Design and Technology. I attend VCAA information sessions and other professional learning relevant to my teaching, especially folio creation and exam preparation courses.

I like to visit art galleries and see exhibitions, and create my own oil paintings when I get the opportunity. I enjoy creating my own timber furniture – tables are my speciality! I’ve also made a plethora of chopping and serving boards with all of the students’ off cuts. I hold a black belt in Aikido, and try to train at least three times a week when I’m not injured.

I have spent the summer holidays at home, preparing for life at Mazenod! When I do get the opportunity to travel I take my wife and two girls to Japan to stay at my Father-in-law’s rice farm in Ibaraki prefecture, north east of Tokyo. Last year I got to plant all of the rice seeds!

Mr John Tighe

I come from Dublin, Ireland. I taught in two high schools, Castlerea for a number of years and for most of my career in St. Peter’s College, Dunboyne. St. Peter’s is a mixed school with a population of 1,200 students.

I taught Religious Education, English and History. I Coordinated the Religious Education department for two three year terms.

I took on a shared role involving School Lay Chaplaincy / Pastoral Care and teaching. This was an amazing time in my career, a whole new experience of student and staff life. I saw turmoil, brokenness, struggles, bereavements and joys of our students, their families and staff members. I was privileged to travel these many different journeys with them.

I was promoted to middle management and took responsibility for student voice, school tours, policy development in critical incidents and pastoral care. As a member of the Pastoral Care team I developed important links between the school and the local community. I oversaw the development of initiatives to help students’ and staffs’ wellbeing. I engaged with Government agencies to develop teaching and learning.

I graduated with honours BA in Theology and Arts from the Pontifical University of Maynooth and a Higher Diploma in Education, diploma in School Chaplaincy / Pastoral Care. I completed many courses / Diplomas in Communications, TEFL, and child welfare. I am now finalising my thesis for a Master’s Degree in school management.

Advancing age guided me towards cruise ships for vacations mainly in Scandinavia and Russia and now I hope we can explore Australia and Asia.

I love road cycling and participate in many charity cycles. I also like to mountain bike. I am a touring motorcyclist and have a liking for AFL and soccer. I also love my cultural games, Gaelic football and Hurling.
