Social-Emotional Learning in the Year Two Classrooms

Across our Year One and Year Two classrooms, we are taking a complementary approach to the use of the Berry Street Diaries to support social-emotional learning.

Firstly, we are utilising the diary to encourage the recording of nightly reading. Students are encouraged to read with a parent or carer. Parents and carers can write a positive comment about their child’s reading. Then those diaries are brought in once a week to be checked by their classroom teacher.

As the diaries are related to the Berry Street Model, we encourage our parents and carers to look over the pages of information with their student as it complements and consolidates the learning we have been doing in our classrooms; which in Term One is based around emotions and feelings.

Throughout these teacher-led discussions, we have been covering concepts such as:

  • Introduction to big emotions (excited, sad, frustrated, angry, etc)
  • Developing an understanding of their feelings and emotions (scaling our reactions)
  • Investigating personal reactions to feelings and emotions (what does your body tell you?)
  • Investigating de-escalation strategies and referring to classroom posters for direction
  • Discussions around the use of the "calm corner" to assist with de-escalation
  • Developing an understanding of what it means to have "positive behaviours for learning" by showing respect, responsibility and resilience.
