A Good Sign

Students across Prep to Year 6 have learning to sign in Auslan.

The Preps were asked; 'What do you enjoy about learning Auslan?' Here's what they said:

“I like it because it helps people who can’t hear and lets them know what we are saying”- Milly (Prep C)

“It’s fun because it helps you learn your letters better”- Alex (Prep D)

“I love doing Auslan cheering because it is nice to cheer for other people”- Karli (Prep C)

“I like getting to move my hands and fingers in different ways to do the letters and Auslan cheering”- Oliver Prep D

“I like doing the alphabet in Auslan”- Max Prep A

“I like signing the letter Z”- Zack Prep A

“I like Auslan cheering”- John Prep B

Year 6 students were asked for their opinion of Auslan. Here are their thoughts:

In my opinion, Auslan has been a success so far this year. We have been learning lots of new signs and I think Auslan is going to help me to communicate and be friendly with the deaf community. So far in Auslan we have been learning basic signs, how to sign numbers, food and many more things. I feel that Auslan is a good way to connecting hearing people with the deaf community. I hope that Auslan becomes a more and more popular way of communicating in the years to come.

So far in Auslan it has been a great Term. I never would have expected to learn so much in such little time. It has been a good Term and I can’t wait to come back next Term!

Oscar Year 6

So far, learning Auslan has been a fantastic experience, being able to discover the sign language used by most people who are deaf. I like to learn this unique system of communication. I enjoy it because I feel like if I get to learn more about this language, I will be able to easily communicate with people I might meet in the future who are deaf or hard of hearing. I would encourage more people to learn more about this language.
