Week 5

Our managed return to school for Week 5 is as follows.

From the Archives

From our Archivist Anthony Kelly.

We recently stumbled across a post on the Armidale Family History Society's Facebook page. Genevieve Butler had shared some memorabilia of her great great grandfather's. After contacting Genevieve, she was pleased to be able to share her story with us.

PHOTO:  Lauchlan Butler (third from left, front row), and the founding members of his De La Salle College orchestra.

"Former member of staff of De Le Salle College, Lauchlan Butler took employment as Professor of Music between 1924 - 1930 specialising in Pianoforte and Violin. Sparking the beginning of the college orchestra, initially with just a handful of loyal students, Lauchlan grew the orchestra over the coming years with his noted contagious energy and dedication to his students, in conjunction with being the local representative of the London College of Music - encouraging his students to participate in official examinations with extraordinary success and recognition. Lauchlan and his wife Ann lived at 92 Kennedy Street, and later at 72 Dumaresq Street though I can only conclude they were never home as Lauchlan continue to contribute widely in the community.

Ninety four years ago, in 1926 his orchestra of five musicians began work with the Theatre Royal Armidale, bringing to life the silent film scores and music entertainment of the evening, Catholic Balls, Fundraising initiatives and also a committee member of the Armidale Music Festival.

The Armidale Chronicle dated 18 September 1926 compliments Lauchlan's work "The Theatre Royal Orchestra, under the baton of Lauchlan Butler is rapidly gaining in public favour and the music alone at this theatre is entertainment in itself."

The Archives welcomes donations of items or printed information that will help in our journey to piece together the rich history of De La Salle, St Ursula and O'Connor Catholic Colleges.

Agriculture

Drought, Fire, Virus, any guesses what is next?... and a little history.

Our school farm has had a small reprieve from the drought and we are able to restart production in some areas.

We have joined our merinos and acquired a new white Suffolk ram to join to our crossbreds.

The first round of our Artificial Insemination Programme was completed for the stud cattle yesterday.

Council is in the process of changing our leased country on the creek which will no doubt create problems into the future.  However who knows what else will turn up next year.

We still have no water to restart our vegetable gardens, and the poultry breeding program is on track.

Students in Year 10 are working on a property plan for a property in Guyra as part of a state wide competition. I encourage parents to have discussions with their child on this project and indeed some students have elected to do a plan for their own family business.

Yr 9 students are working on a variety of projects depending on their circumstances and interest and I look forward to their responses. Some students are conducting plant experiments and research as part of the hermitage research facility competition

Year 7 are powering along with their unit and they have delivered some awesome projects.

Agriculture  History Challenge

Can you name the people in this photo? What is it about? When did it happen?

We will post the challenge to Facebook where your ideas can be posted.

Music

Year 7 and 8 have been exploring rhythm in Music recently. Finlay Coop has produced this short clip showing his rhythmic composition.

Connected Learning

Our daily and weekly challenges have continued to be a great way to remain connected to each other via social media as our period of learning off site is drawing to an end. They have promoted exercise, problem solving and creativity.

Year 12

It has been fantastic to see Year 12 again onsite. On Friday last week, Mrs Channon took the opportunity of spending lunch with them, enjoying a sausage sizzle. They have enjoyed being back together again, albeit at a distance.

8.2 PAC Challenge

Ms Bell was really impressed with how her PAC class took up their Week 2 class challenge. It was a cooking challenge based on fruit.  They certainly produced some tasty treats.

Textiles

Some Year 9 and 10 Textiles students were able to learn some practical techniques used in haute couture fashion recently. The laser cut flowers saved a lot of cutting!!! Hand stitched onto tulle using beads.
