Assistant Principal News

“Action is the fundamental key to success.”
At Marian we see success everyday. Academic success, whether it be by receiving an “A” or by grasping a new concept, Personal success, by achieving a goal or overcoming a difficulty, or simply by coming to school, when it is a mental struggle. Success is defined by the individual and we are lucky enough to witness young people that are striving to meet their potential, or supporting those that are struggling and have lost their way.
This week alone, we have celebrated the success of our Year 11 and 12 students as they received both their academic and their Marian Awards. We have also encouraged students to bring in Toiletry objects to contribute to the thirty I-Care Kits that will be distributed amongst those in need locally. I have observed our Yr 11 Mentors working with younger students with our Kurrajong project as well as witnessing staff support each other through the stresses of report writing.
We encourage our students to continue embracing the opportunities offered at our College, in various capacities, to enable them to achieve their personal and academic success goals.
Speaking of goals, our 7-10 students will soon have a chance to reflect on their achievements and goals for the second half of 2019, when they receive their Semester One reports.
I wish to remind parents that the Grade on the student’s report is not simply a reflection of their formal assessment task results. Rather, it is an indication of the student’s performance and understanding that has been demonstrated through a combination of formal and informal assessment, class work, observation, and discussion.
I urge parents to have a conversation with your child about their strengths and areas for improvement once you receive the report in Week 10.
I also wish to commend our Year 11 Students, Parents and Teachers on their attendance and participation in the P/T/S Conferences that took place on Wednesday Evening. It was pleasing to see such a large group of Parents and Students engaged in professional discussions with teachers, aimed at improving learning.
I encourage parents to follow up with students over the next few weeks to ensure that they are applying the advice suggested by their teachers.
Yours in learning,
Lora Segrave and Damien Herb
