Term 1 Activities

Term 1 has flown by in a flash, and the library has been busy as always. Our renovations are nearing completion, and we are very excited to share the refreshed library space with the whole school community.

The Book Club has had a great time meeting every fortnight to chat about what we’re reading and make recommendations to each other. This term we have celebrated the Inky Awards longlist and started reading some of the amazing books that made the cut this year. We have also had some excellent discussions about representation, inclusivity in literature and how we choose what to read. Our first excursion of the year will be on the 9th May - an opportunity to visit one of the best young adult bookshops in Australia (Readings Kids) and choose books for the library collection.

A new club commenced this term in the Library; Pop Culture Club. This group meets fortnightly after school on Thursdays to chat all things pop culture, including music, comics, fanfiction, zines, video games and fashion. At the most recent meeting we all shared something in pop culture that we are dedicated fans of, and the topics were incredibly diverse… everything from manga to memes! This social group is open to everyone and is a great way to geek-out and meet new people, so please come along if it sounds interesting to you.

Our Library Captain Shruthi (11B) held a New Student Library Orientation on the 13th March which gave new students the chance to learn about the library and ask any questions. This was a great initiative thought-up by Shruthi, and we will continue this in years to come!

The Library Monitors have been keeping the library a tidy, vibrant space for all students to use, and will celebrate a term of hard work with a morning tea on the Tuesday before the holidays. This is also when the Term 1 Library Monitor MVP will be announced.

With the break just around the corner, now is the time to start borrowing books for holiday reading. The library books get awfully lonely with two weeks of no visitors, so we encourage all students and staff to borrow to their heart's content!

The VCE Forum for senior students was held in week five this term, and those students who came along now know about the great resources and services we provide for them in their final years of school. They also got some little-known tips about using their public library and the State Library to their advantage for their studies. For anyone who missed out on this session, you are welcome to visit us in the library to ask any questions. There is also a summary available on the GEC Hub.

We hope everyone enjoys the last few weeks of the term, and has a safe and relaxing holiday filled with plenty of good reading!
