SEAL Program – Year 7 2019
Registrations for the SEAL testing will open shortly. Any families who have a student commencing Year 7 in 2019 who intends to sit the assessment will need to sign on using the link on our website. Testing will occur Friday 18th May commencing at 1pm.
Interschool Sport
It has been great to see so many students participating in the interschool sport competitions. All students in Years 8-12 have had the opportunity to participate in Swimming, Baseball, Softball, Cricket, Tennis, Volleyball and Lawn Bowls. Some of our Year 7 students will be competing in the Beachside Division this Thursday.
Year 7 Camp
It was an absolute pleasure to attend Year 7 Camp recently. Whilst there were many tired bodies by Friday afternoon, there were also lots of happy smiles and joy-filled moments during the three days we were away. Our students were commended for their kindness and polite attitude by the staff of the camp and we worked hard to celebrate and recognise the many ways in which students challenged themselves. For many students this meant stepping on just the first rung of the ladder at the high ropes course, whilst other students were able to extend themselves by encouraging and supporting others.
Gifted Awareness Week
During the final week of term 1, we will be celebrating Gifted Awareness Week. Through this program, we seek to support and celebrate the potential of students of Glen Eira College and enable their talent development. Events will be advertised in the bulletin and all students are encouraged to attend.
Student Leadership
At Glen Eira College, we expect a lot from our student leaders and so it is a big responsibility and requires real commitment. All of our leaders are expected to have an exemplary record regarding behaviour in class (preparedness for lessons, submission of work) and set the standard in terms of presentation, language and behaviour. They must be approachable and reliable and demonstrate enthusiasm for their chosen field, thereby encouraging students to get involved in a range of school activities.

Uniforms, Attendance and the Glen Eira 5
Term 1 is almost over. We have been very proud this term of the way our students have presented themselves to the community. We appreciate your support in reminding students that the only jewellery to be visible is a watch and no more than two pairs of studs or sleepers (plain gold or silver) in the ears only. School shoes must be leather, lace ups – not runners even if they are all black or T-bars.
The uniform sub-committee will again convene this year to continue to review our uniform policy. Please contact me if you wish to contribute to this committee.
Attendance is very important for ensuring your child makes the most of their education. Being late to school will impact on their ability to achieve their best. It is expected that all students will have at least 95% attendance rate at school over the year. It is vital that notes are provided when students are absent or are late. Please note that if your child is not participating in inter-school sport then they are expected to be at school following the program for the day (and a program will be run for them).
This term our teachers have been focusing on improving their practice through Professional Learning Teams. Teachers are working collaboratively to refine, innovate and improve in a range of areas including acknowledging student success, the 7 traits of writing, feedback to students and assessment tools. Our curriculum day was used to do some significant work in setting goals in these areas and we hope you will see evidence of this in your child’s experience at school.
Our values and beliefs are encapsulated in our Glen Eira 5, which was created a number of years ago in consultation with staff, students and parents. We seek to live by these values to provide our young people with a supportive learning community. Please take some time to read and discuss these with your child.
