Year 7 Transition Week and News

As they say in the classics… “What a week (or two) it’s been” in the life of a Year 7.

Students, parents and staff have all had a time of readjustment and settling in, to what is a big transition to a young person’s life.

A new environment, classmates, multiple classes, teachers and rooms were just some of the challenges that new Year 7s had to work through.

The first two weeks have been extremely busy in the life of the College, let alone for a new Year 7 adapting to new faces, relationships, procedures, sport trials, music auditions, protocols and subject content.

Last Friday the 7s were immersed in their House charisms with fun activities planned by their House Coordinators and Year 12 Captains. The day came to a positive finale with high energy and participation with the Year 7 Swimming trials.

This week has also seen the 7s be welcomed into the John XXIII College Community in the Opening Mass and Secondary Assembly. Year 12s lined the isle, welcoming in the Class 2025 which was met with a standing ovation from the rest of the students clapping along to the “Rocky” theme song!

With the Swimming Carnival being today, I am sure all Year 7s will be looking forward to an early bedtime on Valentine’s Day.

STEM Drone Club

We are pleased to announce that the STEM Drone Club will be recommencing this year. This year the club is concentrating on controlling and racing drones. If your child missed the first meeting of the year (Tuesday lunchtime), it is okay. Any student that would like to participate needs only to come along to one of the sessions advertised in the notices read out in Homeroom.

Please note this is open to all secondary students. No experience is necessary. Just a device (phone or tablet) required to control the supplied drone. Should you or your students have any queries please contact Mr Connellan via email.

Mathematics class quizzes

The Years 7 – 10 Mathematics classes will be doing a quiz on a regular basis this year using Mathspace. The results of these quizzes will be recorded on SEQTA Engage but will not contribute to the students grade. The purpose of the recorded result is to provide regular feedback to both students and their parents on how they are coping with the content being taught in class. The teachers will assign questions of varied levels (standard regularly practiced in class type questions up to challenging and perhaps differently worded questions). It might take us a few weeks to get this balance right.
