"If you can mention it, you can manage it"

“If you can mention it, you can manage it.”

Fred Rogers, of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood fame, may not have had the internet in mind when he said those words. But the idea that conversation is where well-being begins … well, that couldn’t be more relevant to today’s digital families.

Cyber experts the world over agree: the absolute BEST way to keep your children safe and balanced online is by talking - and listening.

And what better day than today, Safer Internet Day, to get the conversation started?

Sound awkward? It doesn’t have to be - thanks to our friends at the Office of the eSafety Commissioner. They’ve put together a set of simple but thoughtful questions to start you off in the right direction.

We encourage you to try them out, whether today on the way to school, at the dinner table tonight or in that magic hour before bedtime when all screens power down for the night.

But remember too that talking about online safety, about good digital citizenship, about wellbeing both on and offline, is not a one-and-done deal. Making a commitment to ongoing communication throughout the year ahead is the very best way you can observe Safer Internet Day - and create a home where digital children thrive.

CONVERSATION STARTERS FOR KIDS

Ask your child ...

  • What makes you happy when you’re online?
  • Have you ever seen something online that made you feel worried?
  • What would you do if someone treated you unfairly in an online game?
  • What are some signs an online friendship might be a bit dodgy?
  • What would you do if someone was being mean to your friend online?
  • Who would you go to if something negative happened online?
  • How do you know when it’s time to stop an online activity?
  • How would you know if something online was fake?
  • What would you do if someone online was contacting you, but you didn’t want them to?
  • What are your three top tips for staying safe online?
  • What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen online?

CONVERSATION STARTERS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

For older children, here are questions you can both answer ...

  • What three words describe who you are online?
  • What would you do if a friend was being harassed online?
  • What worries you most about me being online?
  • What pressure do you feel to keep up on social media?
  • What would you do if someone sent you a nude image without your permission?
  • Do you ask permission before posting photos of others online?
