Marist Assistant Principal Conference

‘When they are known, when they feel respect… they thrive’

(Extract for the Marist Teachers Guide 1822)

Recently we travelled to ‘The Hermitage’ in Mittagong to take part in the annual Marist Assistant Principals conference. Here, we explored the challenges faced by Educators regarding ‘Educating for Wholeness’ as well as using pondering how we can use Education as a tool to build a civilisation based on love. We used this to time reflect on the challenges faced by young people in today’s world and how we can best support them by using Marist pedagogy in all things they learn.

In the 1990’s Brendan Nelson and PM John Howard introduced the “Character is Destiny, Values for Australian Schooling’ document. This initiative was designed to be a part of all elements for the school curriculum for all students and focussed on instilling moral values in our students that would develop important life long skills to mould them into compassionate and responsible adults. While this framework did not ‘stand the test of time’ with regards to the curriculum; at Marian we take active steps everyday to combine the Marist way with these fundamental values and beliefs.

Overall this was a revitalising and spiritually enlightening experience enabling us to network with many other Assistant Principals from around the country.

Year 11 and Year 12 Important Dates

I wish to thank all the parents and students who attended the Stage 6 Support Night on Tuesday Evening. In addition, I wish to thank the Pastoral Leaders and presenters for their preparation.

Over a number of years at the College, these nights have proven that they are invaluable to student academic, personal and social success. Our next Support Evening will take place in Term 3 and it is crucial that students make every attempt to attend.

Year 11 parents and students will also receive their Mid Course reports early next week. Please remember that students will receive a Grade on their report which reflects not only their demonstration of learning through assessment tasks, but also through formative class activities and interaction. I encourage Year 11 students reflect on their Grade and the comments they receive in order to make a plan to improve their learning.

In addition, I wish to remind all Year 11 Parents and Students of the ensuing Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences that will take place in Week 8 Wednesday 19th June from 3:45 - 6pm.

It is vital that both Parents and Students attend together in order to help discuss progress, feedback, strengths and areas to improve.

Parents may make bookings through the following link: https://sobs.com.au/

Finally, please remember that the Year 11 and Year 12 Mid Course Awards Ceremony will take place on Thursday 20th June (Week 8) from 11:45 to 12:50 in the College Hall. Please come along and celebrate your child’s success.

Yours in learning,
