Library News

New books, different reading tastes and a world of adventures await – Ms McKie from the library, shares some books we recently purchased and they might pique your interest.

  1. What did you read?  I’ve just read the sequel to A J Betts, HIVE, called ROGUE. A Science Fiction story which involves Tasmania many years into the future. Global warming, earth being hit by an asteroid and people fleeing total control by governments.
  2. Did you enjoy reading it?   Certainly did. Science Fiction is not my favourite genre, but this was a terrific story, that’s why I followed up and read book 2.
  3. Do you recommend it?   Yes, I do recommend these two books, they are almost believeable!  I’ll also recommend “Promise me happy” by Robert Newton, about a boy who chooses to change his behaviour and take responsibility for his actions, despite his harsh upbringing.  AND “White Night” by Ellie Marney about a small community trying to live self-sufficiently off-grid.  This story has gutsy characters, a solid plot and demonstrates the value of good friends who stick with you when the going gets really tough.

The Last Balfour by Cait Duggan  Iona Balfour’s life is totally confused.  Her aunt has been executed for the crime of witchcraft, but before she dies, Iona’s aunt appointed Iona as guardian of a precious family bloodstone which must be delivered to the mysterious Guild of the Green Lion.  Pure fantasy, all lovers of this genre will enjoy.

The 117-Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths   Andy and Terry's amazing treehouse now has 13 new storeys, including a tiny-horse level, a pyjama-party room, an Underpants Museum, a photo-bombing booth, a waiting room, a Door of Doom, a circus, a giant-fighting-robot arena, a traffic school, a water-ski park filled with flesh-eating piranhas and a treehouse visitor centre with a 24-hour information desk, a penguin-powered flying treehouse tour bus and a gift shop. Well, what are you waiting for? It’s high time to come on up!

As happy as here by Jane Godwin  Three early teens with different situations, temperaments and family backgrounds are sharing a hospital ward. Evie is a promising athlete who has had a ghastly accident. Lucy is a talented musician who has a potentially life-threatening illness. Finally, the newest addition to the ward is the unreliable, cranky and neglected Jemma.  While the sensitive and compassionate Evie tries to bond with Jemma, they witness from their hospital window some mysterious behaviour which they believe, is related to a series of crimes in the area. As the drama plays out, their choices take on a worrying naivety that ultimately leads to a chilling climax.

My Father’s Shadow by Jannali Jones  Kaya is completing her Higher School Certificate when she is woken in the middle of the night by her mother. They are to pack immediately and go to their holiday home in the Blue Mountains. Her father is ‘not coming back’. He has been involved in a court case to give evidence against some dangerous criminals.  Months later, they are still in hiding and the mysteries are multiplying. Kaya is not sure who to trust: her mother’s new friend, the policeman or her new friend, Eric, from the local store.  This is a mystery worth reading about!

Everywhere  Everything  Everyone by Katy Warner  Santee is 16 and lives on the bad side of the city.  Even a government-enforced curfew can’t stop the ever-worsening threats.  Z is the cute new boy at school, of course, he’s from the ‘good side’ and despite their differences, Z likes Santee.  Something is finally going right for her.  That is, until a wall goes up overnight dividing the city and isolating Santee’s family.  Santee is trapped on the outside, unable to get back to her family.
