Surf Life Saving Rescue

Liam Doughty

The College community was proud to hear recently of the exploits of Year 11 student Liam Doughty who must be commended for his actions in performing a surf rescue at North Narrabeen Beach. Liam and a close mate rescued a father and son from the surf, with the local social and mainstream media recognising the selfless bravery of their actions. By all accounts the father and son have recovered, after hospital treatment for water ingestion. Well done to Liam on his waterman prowess and community minded bravery.

Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders Link with Vancouver College

As mentioned above EREA have encouraged St Pius X College to connect with fellow Edmund Rice School Vancouver College, Canada, which is a Boys K – 12 school. In speaking with their Principal Mr Daryl Weaver yesterday morning we have agreed to have our student leadership teams meet to share strategic planning and ideas in the September holidays. Our Year 9 students plan to communicate in Religious Education classes together next year and also are looking at other ideas or initiatives which might link our two schools.

EREBB Vaccination Campaign

On Tuesday night in a worldwide Zoom meeting of Edmund Rice organisations, we were invited by the Edmund Rice African based “Justice Desk” to join their global campaign calling for equity through affordable and accessible “Vaccines for All”. Edmund Rice delegates from Africa, India, Rome, Ireland, England and Australia joined the call for action across the majority of the world to ensure that we treat COVID-19 as a global problem to be overcome in solidarity by united global action rather than an “every country for itself mentality” through which “the poor would suffer the most”.

This challenge against unethical power dynamics, to provide for ethical, affordable and accessible vaccine distribution for everyone throughout the world is a cause which some of our students and community will be keen to take up. Please contact Mr Brannan for more ways to access and fact check information and act in this initiative using the Justice Desk’s resources or otherwise!

Thank you

Lastly, I thank you all your support and sharing in my most recent tenure as Acting Deputy Principal of our great school. In spite of all the challenges we are addressing together we can be buoyed by the manner in which our community continues to support each other through these times. I thank Mr John Couani, Mr Paul Ticli, Mr Joe Lynch, Mr Mark Casey, the staff and the Year and Subject Coordinators, and Leadership Team in particular, for their support in leading our school through Terms 2 and 3. It continues to be my great privilege to work with a great student group and inclusive College community in this capacity!

We are blessed.
