Food Technology During Remote Learning

During these challenging times, students have been busy putting their practical knowledge to test in an engaging way and participating in Live Cooking Sessions. I have received some wonderful feedback from the students and always excited to see pictures of their masterpieces, I’m sure that their families have been enjoying the fruits of their labour too!

Year 9 - Food Fundamentals- Paige Campbell. Topic: Baking Techniques

“The transition from onsite learning to remote learning has been really smooth. We still do a range of both theory and practical tasks. During practical lessons we often do live cooking with our class teacher via zoom. Throughout live cooking lessons our teacher cooks alongside us in real time. This gives us the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the functions of each ingredient, the processes we are using and why they are important to the recipe we are following. The theory we do supports our practicals so we further understand the units we are covering. Overall, the food subjects have been one of my favourite parts of remote learning.”

Year 10 – Explore Food- Hannah Boun. Topic: Yeast

“Food tech is interesting because we not only learn to cook but we also learn the problems and the science behind food. Since I like science, I found our classes fun. I thought learning to cook different food remotely, without any practical lessons would be hard. My friends and I were really looking forward to cooking together at school. Unfortunately, we could not. A few weeks ago, we found out lockdown was being extended and that we could not do any practical at school, so we decided to do the practical at home, in our own kitchen. It was a lot more fun than I expected, I learnt to be independent when I cook. In school we had people who would help us, but at home we had a better learning opportunity. Other than cooking I also learnt how to clean up, keep all the things back in place and clear the kitchen to be used again. In our previous online practical, we made bread rolls and soup, we learnt how to work with yeast and any kind of dough made with it. I enjoyed doing it. In our previous classes we went through food waste and food preservation, there were some interesting topics that stood out to me. I bake a lot, but I was always scared to make bread because I did not know how to work with yeast properly, these classes on making bread were useful and informative for me.”

Year 8 – Food Technology – Ethan Cook.

“During the lockdown, Food Technology has been very fun. you can have an honest response to your food from your family. For me, my favourite lesson was when we got to make muffins. They looked like it was all over the place but it was very nice. Also, during the lockdown, one of the topics we looked into was Yeast and how it works. I was interested in this one. Overall for Food Technology, it has been super smooth.

Year 9 – Food Fundamentals - Andre Stepanian-Fard. Topic: Focus on cake making and functions of ingredients

“What I enjoy most about food technology is that we get to learn, create and eat food, furthermore we get to learn about the techniques used to make these foods. Also, it is fun learning about different foods and how they prepared, made and the adequate resources that we may have at home. We need to have these skills to not always rely on takeaway because it costs so much money to do that for a family of 4.

The things I find hardest in lockdown to do is sometimes I don't have another person here to help me explain and to guide me and show me how I could be doing this better or another way. "

National eSmart Week - Friday, 6 September 2021 to Thursday, 12 September 2021

At St. Peter's College, we are an accredited eSmart school, and National eSmart Week is an opportunity to share our knowledge and celebrate being smart, safe and responsible when using digital technology. National eSmart Week runs from Friday, 6 September 2021 to Thursday, 12 September 2021. This year's theme is "Responsible Action".  Being able to take responsibility for our actions, we as a community can play a part in creating a safe environment both online and offline.  By being part of the eSmart community it allows St. Peter's College staff and students, the opportunity to create more awareness and education on issues of cyber safety, bullying and wellbeing.  During this week, we are encouraging all members of our community to promote, inspire and share "Responsible Action" through the use of digital technology.

If you have any questions around National eSmart Week, please contact Mr Jim Constantinou or Mr Cameron Ross
