Year Pre-Camp

Year 9 Pre-Camp Activity Day

It was with much excitement that Year 9’s arrived for the Pre-Camp Activity Day on Monday. The energy was contagious for staff and students alike as this was a ‘first’ for the College with the change from a 5-day event to a 4-day to reduce the passing of increased costs to families.

Students gathered in Houses for the day and were taken through a series of activities led by SNC Staff who would be accompanying students for the remainder of the week. Heads of House supported them during this time and it was fabulous to see students reconnecting friendships and valuing the support of their peers; challenging themselves and not being afraid to put themselves in situations where they weren’t always confident or capable to achieve the ultimate goal being proposed to them.

Some of the activities gave students an insight to the week ahead; setting up and packing down tents without instructions, the packing challenge and orienteering. Others were simply about having fun and team building; get on the chair and the numerous brain challenges.

To end the day, they gathered to reflect on their ‘best selves’ including personal goals and what they are most looking forward to for the remainder of the week regardless of location, express some of the challenges they might face and how they could cope with them. Please find below some reflections where students identified how they would grow personally through the camp experience:

  • ‘Listen to others and value their opinion’
  • ‘Know how to adjust to different people and different environments’
  • ‘Strengthen or make new relationships’
  • ‘Be more open minded, grow in confidence and become more independent’

We thank students and staff alike and hope the remainder of the week was as rewarding as the Pre-Camp Day. The students who remained on Campus have formed their own ‘Camp group’ and have participated in an alternative program. We wish all our Year 9 students a well-earned rest and look forward to meeting again for the Post-Camp Day early in Term 3.
