Food Culture
Giving my students firsthand experience in rich Japanese food culture is one of my goals for this year. Over the past term, the Year 8, 10 and 11 classes have embarked on an incredible linguistic and culinary adventure, delving into the realm of food and drink vocabulary, while also honing their reading, writing, and speaking skills. The following cooking sessions were a part of it for Semester 1.
Year 8 Hotcake cooking
Year 8s have explored various food and drink words, enabling them to expand their vocabulary and develop a deeper understanding of cultural diversity. They then embarked on a culinary endeavor – cooking Japanese-style fluffy pancakes, also known as Hotcakes. This unique and delectable treat is a beloved specialty in Japan, renowned for its light and airy texture.
Year 10 Yakisoba
Year 10s learned important phrases and vocabulary related to dining out, enabling them to order food and drinks in a restaurant setting. They also gained proficiency in using general counters. The students acquired the skills to express ongoing actions in Japanese. To celebrate their learning we cooked Yakisoba, Japanese stir fried noodles.
Year 11 Yakisoba
Year 11s need to learn curriculum aligned vocabulary and grammar structures and be able to apply them in listening, reading writing and speaking. Cooking and eating authentic Japanese food as a cultural experience is equally important since most of them have never been to Japan.
