Year One
Dear Year One families.
We are excited to share with you the latest updates from our Year One classes. We have been busy diving into our new line of Inquiry, "How We Organise Ourselves", which investigates the process of how food is transformed from farm to plate. Our excursion to Animal Land in Diggers Rest further strengthened the students' knowledge outside of the classroom. The excursion was enjoyed by all.
Reading
In Reading, our students have been working on identifying the differences between fiction and non-fiction books. They have been taught different features to help them identify each text type, such as contents pages, diagrams, and glossaries. They are also learning the "Z" and "ZZ" sounds and are beginning to recall known and unknown words within texts that contain these sounds.
Writing
Students utilised their skills and knowledge to write a recount about their long weekend and they included all the fun things they got up to! In addition to this, students continued creating procedural texts by participating in language experiences, including playing snakes & ladders and creating their own board games.
These activities have helped the Year Ones to develop their writing skills about text organisation and allow them to apply what they have learned in a real-world context.
Maths
The Year One students have been exploring directional language and applying it to problem-solving activities. They have been challenged to think creatively and solve problems using their understanding of directional language. Such activities have included verbally giving instructions to locate an object in the classroom or to get to a particular destination using a map. Students have continued to learn about Australian money and have been exploring the difference between cent and dollar coins. Students will also learn the monetary value of the Australian notes and practise ordering them by value.
Inquiry
The Year Ones are currently on Unit of Inquiry 3 ‘Farm to Plate’ unit, where they are beginning to identify the difference between plant and animal-based foods. By understanding the difference between plant and animal foods, it allows our students to make more informed choices about the foods we eat. It has also been a great opportunity to explore how foods are packaged and how we can become more sustainability savvy in how we package our lunches for school. Linking into our current school challenge of Waste Free Wednesdays!
Special Celebration
During the week, the Year Ones went on an excursion to Animal Land to help broaden their understanding of farm to plate. The kids had so much fun doing activities including feeding animals, such as ducks, sheep, and alpacas and going on tractor rides, pony rides, holding rabbits and guinea pigs, tug of war, and poopy scooping. Students also learned about how milk from a cow can be turned into various dairy products like butter. Students were able to churn cream into butter and eat it with their lunch.
