Year Eight

Spanish

Recently in Spanish, Year Eight Students have been learning how to name different parts of the body in Spanish. In small groups, students constructed and labelled a skeleton.

This week in classes we are starting to learn about how to talk about sickness and health. Students will learn some common illnesses and conditions in Spanish and how to describe how they feel.

Mathematics

Over the last seven weeks, we have been working hard to explore concepts in multiple mathematical areas. We have been proud of our students for their dedication and enthusiasm towards their learning during Semester One!

Throughout the last few weeks, students have explored Measurement, where they started by exploring how to convert units of measurement. They investigated a variety of shapes and identified their perimeter and area formulas, including the area and circumference of circles and composite shapes. In pairs, students discovered formulas for prisms and were able to measure the volume of real-world objects around them.

We have currently shifted our focus to Number and Algebra where we will be exploring Real Numbers for the remainder of the term. This includes rational and irrational numbers, decimal number properties, fractions, percentages, as well as rates and ratios.

For students to identify specific learning goals, we currently have a focus on goal setting using Essential Assessment My Numeracy tasks, where students are working on an area specific to their individual learning needs each week. This allows students to work in focus groups to not only improve their mathematical knowledge, but also their teamwork and collaboration skills.

Students have also enjoyed the ability to work collaboratively with their peers, using the new bench spaces that have been delivered this week to our portables, including a whiteboard table perfect for exploring math concepts during class.

Wood Technology

Over the course of the Term, Year Eight students have been busy working their way through the various stages of the Design Cycle and creating their final designed solution, the Wireless Charging Side Table. Students were provided a design brief which outlined the need for the Side Table, determined the purpose behind creating the solution and outlined the constraints and considerations before beginning the construction process.

With this information, they then began to implement the Safe Operating Procedures of the Tenon Saw to cut Mitre Joints into the legs of the table, used the Bevelled Edge Chisel to create a Cross Lap Joint to assist in the stability of the table and joined each component together with the use of a Cordless Drill, glue and nails.

In the remaining weeks of the Term, the students will apply finishing techniques to their table such as, wood filler, sanding and oiling to complete their table.

                        Humanities

The Year Eight students are delighted to share with you the highlights of Term Two in our Humanities classes, where our students delved into the captivating topic of how our modern world has been shaped by its citizens through protest and revolution. They Explored the purpose of law and the consequences of breaking them, gaining valuable insights into the varying societal structures and freedoms across different nations.

Throughout the term, students engaged in thought-provoking discussions and activities centred around the profound impact of protest and revolution. They critically examined the motives, strategies, and outcomes of historical and contemporary events that have shaped our world today. By studying various case studies and real-life examples, students developed a deeper understanding of the power of collective action and its role in effecting change. A key focus of our curriculum was to understand the purpose of laws within societies and the repercussions faced when these laws are broken.

Students examined different legal systems and explored the reasons behind their establishment. Through engaging debates and case studies, they gained a comprehensive understanding of the intricate relationship between laws, justice, and societal harmony.

To enrich the learning experience, our students participated in a range of hands-on activities. These included group discussions, multimedia presentations and independent research projects. Students had the opportunity to express their viewpoints, develop critical thinking skills, and collaborate with their peers, fostering an environment of active and meaningful learning.

We are thrilled to showcase the exceptional work produced by our talented students during Term Two in the field of Humanities. Students exhibited remarkable creativity and critical thinking skills. Let's take a moment to appreciate some outstanding examples of their work.
