Year Six

Dear Year Six Families,

We have almost made it to the end of term two, and what a term it has been. Since coming back from camp students have settled straight back into our regular schedule at school, and we have so many exciting things to share with you already!

Unit of Inquiry Three

Students have excitedly been working through our 'How We Organise Ourselves' unit. Each class has begun planning their election day speeches whereby students can run for our Year Six Parliament. Students have chosen whether they are a part of the 'Education' or 'Aesthetic' party and have been planning how they might improve our school if they get elected for parliament. Students will then get to experience preferential voting as they vote within their 'electorates' for who they would like to represent them. As we would like to students to have the full experience when voting, the day will be concluded with a sausage sizzle.

Winter Sport

This week saw students participate in the winter interschool sports competition. The sports included; hockey, netball, teeball, AFL,  and soccer. At the end of the day, soccer won third place and our girls netball came second! All teams were so well behaved and displayed excellent sportsmanship. Congratulations to all teams!

Parliament Prize

Our students have been writing speeches and recording videos for the Parliament Prize Competition. This competition is for Victorian school students, from Grade 5 to Year 12. Students are able to write a 90 second Member's Statement highlighting the issues in their community, why they are important and what they believe should be done to overcome it. This is then filmed and uploaded to be viewed by members of the Victorian Parliament. We have had so many innovative ideas this year so we have our fingers crossed one of our talented Year Sixes win an award this year!

Data Representation and Interpretation

As we are entering our final weeks of the term, we are concluding our first Statistics and Probability maths unit. Students have been working extremely hard and have been resilient when facing learning challenges. Students have been taking data relating to our government, and data they have collected themselves and creating and interpreting different data displays ranging from column graphs to box plots.

Reading Groups

Students have been engaged in a range of reading activities. In Miss Fatouros & Miss Wetherill's group students have been reading their second literacy discussion books and have been making connections, asking questions and being able to discuss their agreed upon chapters. In Mrs Kilner & Mr Bliss' group, students have been engaged in author studies, whereby students are able to research into an author and learn all about their inspiration for writing, which in turn assist students in their understanding of texts. Making connections, has been Mr Peterson & Mrs Singh's focus. Students have been exposed to a range of texts and were then able to make text, self, and world connections to improve their reading comprehension.

Saltwater Scoop

We have something special in store for you for our next addition of the Saltwater Scoop. On camp, our talented Year Six Scoopers were creating a news broadcast to share their trip around Canberra. Stay tuned!
