Year Five

Dear Year Five Families,

With only two weeks remaining to the end of term 2. Students are working hard to achieve their full potential in all curriculum areas.

Unit of Inquiry

In Inquiry, our students are exploring opportunities and circumstance through visible thinking routines. They analysed and responded to people’s circumstance by observing different scenarios. They looked at rights and responsibilities by examining the different articles of human rights and how they are important to us.

Reading

In Reading, students are working on analysing author’s purpose and students explored different texts. We looked at what an inference is, and how to make connections about the feelings of characters. They identified the author’s purpose and communicated the meaning through the text. Students were exposed to different reading texts on Epic about Historical Narratives, and they reflected on the stories they read. They made the different connections with different genres and text features.

Writing

In Writing, students are finishing off with their Historical Narratives, and they are using the examples of exciting endings. We also looked at the language and descriptions based on time period of their event. Students also used  VCOP to revise and edit their historical narratives. They looked for using an interesting vocabulary, sentence openers and correct use of punctuations in their narratives.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, Students are exploring a unit of Statistics and Probability - Data Representation and interpretation. We are conducting the different types of surveys within the classroom, and then students are displaying their collected data in the form of graphs. Most of the Year 5 students are enjoying this unit of work as they have shown the confidence to work independently to achieve their learning goals in Maths.

Hands on Learning

Last week students displayed their skills by constructing a structure with a deck of cards which can hold a bottle of water. They used different techniques to support the structure and improvised their models by their applying critical and creative thinking skills.
