Year Three

Dear Year Three Families,

The Year Three students have been working hard on their learning. All students are to be commended for their commitment to their learning over this exciting semester.

Reading

In Reading, students in Year Three have learnt how to identify the author's message in fiction texts. The Author's message is the moral or lesson to be learnt in a text. Students have been immersing themselves in a variety of fiction texts to identify and unpack the author's message.

This week, students explored the point of view of fiction texts. This is where a fiction text can be told in first, second or third person.

Writing

In Writing, students have started learning about explanation texts. An explanation text explains 'how' or 'why' something occurs. Students had the opportunity to create a new form of technology using what they had learnt from Unit of Inquiry two. Students designed a new form of technology that could be used in the future. The Year Three's used the structure of an explanation text to explain how their new technology worked. Students used a checklist to revise and edit their work.

Maths

In Maths, students have explored data. Students have explored how to collect, display and analyse data. Students collected their data using a tally chart. Using the collection of data, students displayed their data using column graphs, bar graphs, pie charts and picture graphs.

This week, students are exploring multiplication. Students were provided with worded problems to explore their thinking and were encouraged to show their thinking using multiple strategies.

Inquiry

In Inquiry,  we finalised Unit of inquiry Two, where students presented an action piece to demonstrate what they have learnt about Technology.

Last week, we began our Third Unit of Inquiry, on the Central Idea 'Effective healthcare systems prioritise community welfare and wellness.' Students participated in provocation day, where we visited the sick bay. Students also had the opportunity to complete a range of activities to provoke their thinking about our new Unit of Inquiry. These activities were all linked to 'healthcare'. Students also unpacked the Central Idea and defined key words to enhance their knowledge.

This week, students defined what a 'healthcare system' by using a mind map to show their thinking. Next week, students will continue to investigate the healthcare systems available in our local community.
