Student Leadership

Our wonderful student leaders have been busy collaborating across the student leadership committees, and welcoming our new Class and Form Captains to the team. It’s been wonderful to see students from all year levels working together to identify common goals, and volunteer their time to create a vibrant and positive school environment at Thornbury High.

This has included the Civics and Citizenship and Academic Committees collaborating on larger ideas, the Arts Committee joining forces with Art Club, and the committees running multiple special event fundraisers including IDAHOBIT and Reconciliation Week. I thank all our student leaders for their passionate involvement this term, and I look forward to seeing this collaboration into term 3.

IDAHOBIT

Thornbury High celebrated IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia) on the 19th May with various activities throughout the week to enhance and support our LGBTQIA+ peers and students. The date signifies when homosexuality was declassified as a mental health disorder in 1990 by the World Health Organisation. This year's theme was, “Together Always: united in diversity”.

To explore this theme the student leadership team created multiple opportunities for staff and students to get involved.  Our Civics and Citizenship School Captain, Allisandra Harris hosted a ‘How To Be An Active Ally’ information session in the Auditorium, the Arts Committee collaborated with our Art Club to run a fun session creating colourful IDAHOBIT-themed posters, we joined forces with the schools new Thornbury Pride group to run a film screening, and we ended the week with an out of uniform day fundraiser, raising almost $700 for Pride Foundation Australia.

Reconciliation Week

On Friday 2nd June, the Student Leadership  and Wellbeing team held a bake sale in the school community as part of our recognition of Reconciliation Week. Students and teachers across year levels were very excited and enjoyed this event, and baked goods sold out quickly. This bake sale has been even more meaningful when we received different contributions of sweets from students and teachers across the school such as freshly baked cookies, lollies and cupcakes. In total, we have raised nearly $500 which will be donated to the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Association (VACCA).

I would like to thank all the baking contributors,  student helpers and supervising teachers who helped out on the day.
