THS Performing Arts

On the evening of Thursday 15th June, at the Melbourne Recital Centre, five THS music students took part in the professional performance of Speak Percussion's new work, "Sonic Eclipse."

William Walter, Jaspar Conway, Yilin Chuang, Jethro Clarke, and Tim Pope all gave up a sizeable amount of time over the last 2 months to rehearse for this event. Speak Percussion invited school students from all over Victoria to participate in this event with professional musicians, and Thornbury High School had the highest student representation of any school. Our students completed 4 separate, 3 hour rehearsals in preparing for the piece composed by Thomas Meadowcroft (AUS/GER), Cathy Milliken (AUS/GER), Damien Ricketson (AUS), and Erkki Veltheim (AUS).

It was impossible to describe or even aurally record the event as the musicians were wandering all over the Recital Centre creating a sea of incredible music which sounded different to everyone, depending on where they were located. The students' playing bookended the percussion feature in the actual hall, which was reminiscent of a horror or sci-fi movie soundtrack.

I was immensely proud of the performance from our students, and wish to thank them and their families for all the hard work and organisation needed for participating in all the rehearsals and the final performance.
