New Things To Start Off The Term At SPS

Outdoor seating: Our new outdoor seating has arrived and is already being used by our Foundation students. This seating is the 2nd stage of the Foundation outdoor learning space upgrade; the first was the shade sails. Next on the list is painting the area.

Library:The library upgrade is almost complete. We have purchased new seating and have added tables to make the space available for lessons and lunchtime library activities. The lighting has also been upgraded. Our picture storybooks are now displayed in nice red book cases and are more prominent in the room, easily accessible for all readers.

Grips & Capping: You may have noticed the new grips on the front steps and stage area. During Term 1 we had an OH&S safety audit conducted on entrances, exits and stairways. After the audit, it was identified that we needed to replace and/or add grips and capping on many stairs and ramps. This work has been completed.

Thank You For Your Generosity

At the end of Term 2, we held a fundraising free dress day to which students and staff could come dressed as their favourite sport star, or representing their favourite sport, for a donation. The fundraiser was for the Warrandyte Cricket Club, to help in their support of the victims of the Newcastle bus crash and their families. Thanks to the wonderful generosity of our community, the day raised $1,410.00! This was an outstanding effort!

Below is an acknowledgement of our donation from the Warrandyte Cricket Club:

The Warrandyte Cricket Club would like to say THANKYOU for your generous support. Your gift has been distributed to those affected by the bus accident and those involved send their love and appreciation.

Thanks,

NAPLAN Results

Next week NAPLAN results will be released to schools. Soon after they will be released to parents. There have been significant changes to the results table in NAPLAN this year. The band structure has gone, and will be replaced with these 4 achievement levels.

  • Excelling
  • Strong
  • Developing
  • Needs support

More details about the new scoring system will be delivered to parents with the NAPLAN results.

New Students

We have had a slight influx to our student numbers this term. We have had 3 new students transfer in, and one return from the Blackburn Language School. We are also hosting international students for Term 3. We welcome our new families to Scoresby PS.

Writing Focus For 2023

Our focus for improved teaching practice this year is Writing. Our actions and goals from our Annual Implementation Plan are guiding our work. So far this year, we have had many staff meetings looking at our students' writing, discussing evidence-based, researched readings and our teaching practices in Writing. Term 3 sees us begin to implement 'The 6 +1 Traits of Writing' framework.

On our Curriculum Day, Friday 4th August, literacy specialist Riss Leung (The Ozlit Teacher) will be back to work with us.  Staff will be learning how to effectively implement Writer’s Notebooks in their classrooms, further work on The 6+1 Traits of Writing and using literature to support students' writing.

The Fathering Project

Thank you to the dads who completed our Fathering Project survey.  We are looking to hold our first 'Dads and Kids' event online with a Virtual Trivia Quiz later in the term.  More information will be announced in our next newsletter.

Children’s University

This year our Year 3 and 4 students were offered the opportunity to participate in the Children’s University program through Swinburne University. The Children’s University offers our students opportunities and recognition for completing and participating in learning beyond the school. Our students have attended a number of holiday programs, learning about the moon landing and astronauts, as well as coding using Minecraft.  They have also continued to learn online about our oceans, pollution and developing their art work, just to name a few.

“The childrens university program is a fantastic initiative to involve children in the wider community seeking out fun and different learning opportunities.

It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm for participation in activities, interests and it’s fun for kids to track the progress towards the 30 hour goal for graduation.

It has also encouraged the whole family to engage with visits to fun places in support of the program and we have enjoyed this thoroughly as a family.

Thanks to Mrs Rheumer and the SPS team for offering such a great opportunity to the kids.”
