Under 15s Cricket Campbelltown Collegians blue “The Boarder Collies”

Day 1

A fantastic win for the boys last weekend versing Camden. The first day consisted of an excellent bowling attack from Camden who rocked us, getting us all out for 79 in just 42 overs. At one stage we were 6/42 off 20 overs (Not looking good). Due to some great resilience and never say die attitude from the lower order batsman coming in, Nicholas Platts, Jack McDonald, Mason Rope and Daniel Grundy put up a solid effort with the Bat.

Still with play left to go in the day Camden had gone in to bat, the boys picked up 2 quick wickets to finished off Day 1.

Day 2

The Boarder Collies needed 8 wickets to win the game with Camden needing an extra 58 runs from there score of 22 to win the game. It was not going to be easy for us.

The boys once again had to start the bowling and fielding attack strong, and once again were like firecrackers in the field. The boys knew that they wanted to get at least 2 wickets in the first 4 overs to apply some much needed pressure on Camden. What came next was something that cricketers only dream of. Within the first 6 overs of Day 2, Ben Taylor, showing some serious swing troubled the batting attack picking up a hat-trick. Jack Kingwill also showing signs of some serious pace picked up some wickets also.

From the first ball on Day 2 the boys played like they were never going to lose the game, they had a will to win, showing the St Gregory’s spirit of 'never say die attitude'. It was truly amazing to see.

Overall, a great game of cricket from the boys bowling Camden out for 57 with some excellent bowling figures from Ben Taylor 4/5 and Jack Kingwill 4/11.

The 1st grade game was close in the 1st half until Blake McKenna opened up the game with four 3 pointers and lead St Greg’s to victory.

Sport Report

Term 4, Week 2, 2019

All College MCS teams are in full swing as both basketball and cricket teams completing their opening games of their respective seasons. Our A Grade Basketball team got a much-needed win to kick-start their season against a formidable Blacktown team. Mrs Giles was very happy with this result.

Our Cricket teams battled the traffic, the heat and the thunderstorm to return some tidy results which will see most teams remain on top of their respective competitions.

Good luck to our students representing the College in the Downie Shield (Opens) match vs St Mark’s College and the Berg Shield (U15’s) matches vs St Dominic’s (Round 1) and either Bede Polding/St Columbus in Round 2.

Our 1st XI also will be taking on Westfields in the semi-finals of the NSW All Schools Champions Cup on Wednesday 13 November. We wish all our MCS and College teams the best of luck in their upcoming games.

Week 2 - MCS Reports

1st Grade Cricket (1/112) defeated Eastwood (111)

This game was the first time in a LONG time the opposition created some nervousness. Eastwood were 4/90 off 12 overs when our boys decided that they should probably start taking the game seriously. Thankfully, some smart bowling from Sanjiv Weerasingham helped turn the tide and Eastwood finished on 111 at the final over. Mr Bullock's pep talk saw Kane Truman and Sanjiv Weerasingham came in all guns blazing, sixes and fours all over the ground. Their 80-run partnership came to an end in the 6th over, with Liam Sutton taking the crease with the same momentum. Greg's reached the required total in the 10th over, with the bus trip home taking longer than the time required to score the runs.

MVP: Sanjiv Weerasingham 3/6 and 48 n.o. (Donovan)

Mr S. Bullock

2nd Grade Cricket 6/127 defeated Blacktown 2/125

Blacktown batted first with 2 very solid opening batters who were hitting us all around the park. Guymer and Shipley produced some tight overs to reduce their run rate. They set a respectable total of 125. Our boys did not start well with a couple quick wickets falling. Luckily, we have a deep batting line-up and each new batter that came in were confident they could get the job done. A steady 45 from Shortland and a quick fire 38 from Quodling steered us to a win in 17 overs.

MVP: Jacob Shortland (Laurentian)

Mr M. Bullock

3rd Grade Cricket (9/74) were defeated by Parramatta 10/85

Despite defeat, the St Greg’s 3rd XI put in a gallant effort away to Parramatta’s First XI. Outclassed by a very good bowling attack that reflected a 1st XI team, Tom Grant lead a chase with the bat that was forced to cope with regular wickets falling and a slow field. Some great efforts in the field with J. De Livera picking up 3/16 and some fantastic fielding by Pat Ward and Harrison Barnett. An effort the boys should be proud despite the adverse result.

MVP: Patrick Ward (Molloy)

Mr Goodsell

4th Grade Cricket – bye round

9/10 A Cricket 3/85 (11.5) defeated Parramatta 5/84

A quick return to form for the 9A cricket team after a disappointing start last week. The boys bowled first and leaked 30 runs in the first five overs as the Parramatta openers took on the new ball. However, two wickets in two balls by Tom Chell got Greg’s back on top and really put the brakes on the opposition scoring. Some good fielding and tight bowling from Sam Gelder and Lachlan Stanley restricted Parramatta to 5/84 at the end of their 20 overs. Despite an early wicket, a good partnership by Riley Kingsell (39) and Marcus Zapiran (31*) brought the required run rate down quickly and the team raced past the opposition total in the 12th over.

MVP: Tom Chell (Kilian)

Mr McGinnity

9/10 B Cricket 2/90 defeated Schofields 3/84.

An accident on the freeway and a double booking of the oval caused the game to be shortened to 10 overs each. Schofields batted first and scored a solid 3/84. St Greg’s Bs were able to match that reaching the 85 required to win with a 6 from Cooper Cross. Lachlan Good 3/3 Cooper Cross 37 not out.

MVP: Lachlan Good (Laurentian)

Mrs Sligar

7/8 A Cricket 5/53 defeated Parramatta 52

St Greg’s won the toss and elected to bowl containing Parra to a 10/52 off 20. Highlights included Harrison Collins 0/8 off 4 (1 mdns), Isaac Gasson 2/8 off 4 (1 mdns), Archie Nott 2/11 off 3 (1 mdn), Lincoln Parmeter 4/14 off 4; 1 catch, Mason Rope with 2 catches and Jeremiah Wagg with 1/1 off 3 (2 mdns). Batting highlights included Coby Holland with 13, Archie Nott with 17 and Lincoln Parmeter with 11.

MVP: Lincoln Parmeter (Donovan)

Mr Bingham

7/8 B Cricket 1/81 defeated Schofields 3/18

It was a very warm outing today for the 7B’s as they took on St John Paul II Schofields in a limited 10 overs match. Captain Harry Davies unfortunately loss the toss and Schofields sent us in to bat. Darcy Weston and Tom Dzevlan we’re given openers duties and gave us a brilliant start. Darcy wasted no time hitting a quick fire 30 before he got bowled in the 5th over. On the other hand, Tom took his time getting into the innings and finished on 37 not out with Jack McDonald also not out on 19. A great 10 overs with the bat saw us finish the innings at 1/81. It was a very similar innings with ball on our behalf, with Schofields getting through 10 overs at 3/18. Joshua Ryan, Jack Dash and Sam Kelly all took an impressive 1-2 off their respective overs.

MVP:  Tom Dzevlen (Laurentian)

Mr Suters

1st Grade Basketball (65) defeated Blacktown (51)

What a start to the MCS season. It was obvious from the pregame discussion that this team was ready to play and very focused on getting a win. Boy did they deliver. We dominated both ends of the court and even though Blacktown were sinking some very nice 3-point shots they did not have a chance of winning this one. Amazing effort by every player - everyone played their role superbly. The performance electrified the spectators, as their constant cheering and encouragement just continued to inflame the passionate play happening on the court. Well done gentlemen - very proud!

MVP: Chris Seton (Kilian)

Mrs Giles

2nd Grade Basketball (25) were defeated by Blacktown (27)

Excellent first game of the season against strong opposition. Players were starting to gel by the end of the game. Even though it was a loss there was much promise shown.

MVP: Jackson Pascoe (Donovan

Mr Perna

Year 9/10 Basketball (10) were defeated by Blacktown (34)

The boys found the competition quite strong and were intimidated by the size of the Blacktown opposition. We held them for a period of time, however we allowed them to move the ball around too much and make breaks against the run of play. Our passing game needs improvement. As does our rebound game. Better luck next round gents.

MVP: Liam Croker (Kilian)

Mr Ivancic

Year 8/9 Basketball (26) were defeated by Blacktown (33)

The team began their season against a tough Blacktown outfit. The opposition had a clear size advantage and looked to make use of it close to the basket, but the boys didn't take a backward step. The game see-sawed in the first half as the lead was swapped numerous times. The introduction of Kohan Prenter off the bench provided some offensive spark and we went into halftime at 14 all. The second half was just as tight. With the score at 22-21 in favour of Blacktown the boys stole the ball twice but couldn't capitalise on their strong defence. Blacktown managed to score the crucial baskets in the final two minutes. I was very proud of the boys and the way they held themselves on the court. They played very well against a strong team and as a group we are very excited for the rest of the season. Mr Benedict Limbrey

MVP: Kohan Prenter (Molloy)

Mr Limbrey

Year 7/8 Basketball (14) were defeated by Blacktown (29)

Very proud of this group of young men. Considering it was their first time playing together they put in an excellent performance against a very tough opponent. They listened intently to instructions from the sideline and made the opposition work for every possession. Unfortunately our shooting percentage hindered out ability to close the gap. Well done – looking forward to seeing how the season pans out.

2019/20 Downie Shield Round 1

The First XI begun their Downie Shield CCC campaign against St Mark’s Catholic College.

After winning the toss and batting, it seemed the boys were in an aggressive mood motoring to 51 off the first 7 overs, before Kane Truman (37) tested his luck one too many times. Manoj Weerasingham (55) and Liam Sutton kept the scoring rate up before Liam fell for 16, which brought Josh Campbell (53) to the crease who also continued the high run rate for several more overs. A series of wickets fell soon after and we found ourselves 6 down after 30 overs, not ideal with 20 overs remaining! Thankfully, Jack Slane (67) and Bryan Handunneththi (34) steadied the ship and put on a large partnership and with three overs remaining the boys had rocketed to 6/270. A few late wickets tumbled but we finished on a formidable 292 off the 50.

St Mark’s got off to a steady start, and it was not until about the 17th over before we managed to take the first wicket. They moved to 2/88, however the scoring rate was slow, and eventually the scoreboard pressure forced them to be more aggressive. There was some excellent bowling from Bryan Handunneththi and Lachlan Campbell who combined to take the last 7 wickets in a short period of time and the opposition was bowled out for 100. We now move to the second round against Fairfield Patrician Brothers.

Some pics below – we have some very interesting bowling techniques in this side!

Sport Report

Term 4, Week 3, 2019

There have been some impressive sporting results over the last week with representative cricket teams getting their seasons off to flying starts. Our 1st XI defeated St Marks Catholic College in Round 1 of the 2019/20 Downie Shield competition.

While our U15 Berg Shield team, new to the event competition list, defeated St Dominic’s and St Columbus in Round 1 and 2. With a heavy school schedule upon us, our 1st XI also took on Patrician Brothers – Fairfield in Round 2 of the Downie Shield to secure another positive outcome rolling the opposition for 40 runs and passing their total in only 7 overs. Both teams progress to the next rounds in the near future.

Our MCS teams have return more impressive results with some brilliant individual performances that warrant College MVP awards. See below for full match reports.

Week 3 - MCS Reports

1st Grade Cricket 7/92 were defeated by St Dominic’s (9/117)

Our first MCS 1st Grade loss in 3 years. Could have easily been a win. Dom's were off to a flying start - 3/88 off 11 overs. However, our boys made a comeback keeping Dom's to an achievable 9/117 off 20 overs. Greg's started off well, with Sanjiv Weerasingham scoring at a cracking pace. A poor umpiring decision saw him given out on 19. From there the boys failed to fire up, with a slow run rate and a series of shocking deliveries that failed to be called for wides. Greg's finished on 7/92.

MVP: Lachlan Campbell. (Donovan)

Mr S. Bullock/Mrs J. Farias

2nd Grade Cricket 2/200 defeated Eastwood 106

St Greg’s won the toss and elected to bat first. We were going at a steady rate without losing any wickets. Jacob Shortland once again showed his batting class scoring 70 off 48 balls batting most of the innings. Matthew Canellis took his time getting his eye in to then explode and score 79 from 40 balls. We ended on the total of 2/200 off the last ball. Eastwood has some classy bats that kept their run rate within a range where they could reach the target. Our bowlers pressed for wickets though with Lachlan Vella taking a hat-trick and ending the match with 4/13 off 3 overs putting the total out of their reach. We eventually bowled them out for 106 to cement a strong win.

MVP: Lachlan Vella (Donovan)

Mr M. Bullock

3rd Grade Cricket 0/74 defeated Dundas 9/70

A fantastic bowling effort by Alex Mullan (5/7) and supported by some excellent wicket keeping by Noah Morris helped restrict Dundas to 70. Mentions must also go to Pat and Jacob Ward, Harrison Barnett and Tom Grant for some great fielding. An aggressive start by Mathew Levi (40*) was supported with great stroke play by Hayden Cortis (20*) to comfortably chase down the total for a well-deserved win.

MVP: Alex Mullan (Molloy)

Mr Goodsell

4th Grade Cricket 114 were defeated by Eastwood 6/126

With some strong batting by Eastwood to start, with their first wicket falling in the tenth over to Jack Rule, Greg’s came back with some superb wickets to Tom Carroll and Anthony Tomasella, however Eastwood finished their innings with 6/126. Greg’s had a hard chase with some early outs, but special mention to Blake Ciscato hitting three 4’s in a row, to then be caught on his 4th attempt at a four. Tom Carroll came out guns blazing with a total of 34, hitting 16 of those runs in just one over. Even though the boys lost the game, they showed excellent sportsman ship on a scorcher of a day.

MVP: Tom Carroll (Molloy)

Ms Dennis-Ward

9/10 A Cricket 1/58 (7.1) defeated Dundas 55

A comprehensive performance by the 9A's this week at Eschol Park. Dundas batted first and struggled to 55 in their 20 overs. Blake Truman bowled very well with the new ball taking 3/4 before Tom Chell and Lachlan Stanley broke through the middle order with 3/14 and 2/10 respectively. The moment of the innings came when Tom Chell took a one-handed overhead screamer at point to remove a dangerous lower order hitter from Dundas. In reply, St Greg's lost one wicket on the way to 58 in 7.1 overs with Jack Losurdo making a quickfire 39 not out to wrap up the win quickly.

MVP: Tom Chell (Kilian)

Mr McGinnity

9/10 B Cricket 84 were defeated by Eastwood 3/130

Eastwood batted first and put on a solid 130 runs. This proved to be beyond our reach today as we managed 84 runs in reply. J. Kingwill 1/18 Cooper Mangan 1/20 Lachlan Good 22 not out

MVP: Lachlan Good (Laurentian)

Mrs Sligar

7/8 A Cricket 5/199 defeated Dundas 9/25

St Greg’s won the toss and elected to bat building a tremendous score of 5/199 off 20.0. Bowling highlights included: Lincoln Parmeter with 4/4 off 4 (2 mdns); Ben Taylor with 2/1 off 4 (3 mdns), 1 catch; Harrison Collins with 0/0 off 2 (2 mdns); Daniel Canellis with 1/3 off 2; Archie Nott with 1/2 off 3 (2 mdns); Isaac Gasson with 0/6 off 2, 2 catches and Coby Holland our explosive wicket-keeper. Batting highlights included: Daniel Canellis with 42, Jack Spragg with 48 and Jeremiah Wagg with 68.

MVP: Jeremiah Wagg (Laurentian)

Mr Bingham

7/8 B Cricket 3/136 were defeated by Eastwood 0/152

7B’s took the long trip out to Meadowbank this afternoon to take on Marist College Eastwood. We loss the toss unfortunately and Eastwood elected to have a bat. The two openers for Eastwood were playing some brilliant cricket, making the most of quick singles from the first ball. They ended up batting the overs out and finished at 0/152. Our batting innings started once again with openers Tom Dzevlan and Darcy Weston. Unfortunately, Tom couldn’t replicate his efforts last week having been bowled for 1 run. Darcy once again looked solid hitting 25 before coping his marching orders by LBW. It was our number three batsmen who we’d rely on today, captain Harry Davies had a belter of an innings finishing on 77 not out. He was helped along by Matt Parkin 13 and Jack McDonald 11 not out. At the end we fell short by 17 runs, finishing at 3/136.

MVP:  Harry Davies (Laurentian)

Mr Suters

1st Grade Basketball (37) were defeated by St Dominic’s (67)

Well what a difference a week makes! The team got off to a very poor start in the first half with extremely poor shooting percentage and no intensity on defence. Half time score 12 - 39. After some soul searching and encouragement from one another to lift their game at half time we came out and were extremely competitive. Only going down in the second half 25 - 28. The team needs to learn from this round and use it to get back to Round 1's standard.

MVP: Riley Anderson (Donovan)

Mrs Giles

2nd Grade Basketball (36) were defeated by St Dominic’s (48)

The loss of 3 players before the game began meant we only had 2 substitutes for this game. St Dom’s is one of the strongest teams in the competition. Eventually our fitness let us down toward the end of a difficult match in hot conditions.

MVP: James Hilton (Molloy)

Mr Perna

Year 9/10 Basketball (10) were defeated by St Dominic’s (34)

The boys pushed hard to overcome again a clear height disadvantage against a team that have been a squad for some time. Great games again from Liam, Kian and Christian. Post-match discussions have again highlighted key areas we need to work on.

MVP: Kian Boyne (Molloy)

Mr Ivancic

Year 7/8 Basketball (35) defeated St Dominic’s (26)

We dominated throughout the entire game on a very hot afternoon in the tin shed at Minto. The pressure defence was outstanding, and the rebounding skills of Nathaniel and Brodie set us up for numerous opportunities for possession. The improvement in all players from the first round to the second round was phenomenal. Working well as a team was another factor in the win this week. Well done gentlemen on you first win in the MCS competition.

MVP: Nathaniel Gallagher (Donovan)

Mrs Giles
