Junior School

BMX Champion

The BMX State Championships were held in Warrnambool last November, with Connor Fallon - (Year 8) capping off an excellent 2018 by winning the state title in his age group. Connor, along with fellow student and good mate, Cobie Ralis, is coached by Josh Callan, a former Championship rider who reached number seven in the world in 2013.

Both boys belong to Lilydale BMX Club and have been riding for about  five years. The Australian National Championships are to take place in Shepparton in May, with Connor set to compete against the best riders from across the country.

Top 12 Futsal Experience

Maddie Campbell  (Year 7) travelled to Barcelona to take part in the Top 12 Futsal experience.  She was selected from trials held all over  Australia to attend a week's coaching with top coaches in Europe.

She then played in a competition against American and Spanish teams whilst representing Australia. Maddi also played a mini friendly with the USA team v Girona.

Maddie had a great experience and made many new friends from across the world.

Maddie was ranked in the top four players in her age group. This will see her gain possible entries for global tournaments and a second trip to Spain in 2020.

Year 7 Fibres and Fabrics

Students have just completed construction of their calico bags. They did a sensational job of measuring, pinning and sewing their bags before learning to tie-dye them with vibrant colours and patterns.

Year 8 Fabrics

This class have been working on a number of small production tasks to build their skills in time management, sewing and independently following pattern instructions.

They have been working their way through making cushion covers, doggy/kitty bandanas, scrunchies and beanies. Some students have been so keen to make some items, they have made multiples.

Year 7 Science

In Year 7 Science, we have been investigating the properties of substances, which includes changes from solid, liquid or gas and examples of substances that have qualities of more than one state at the same time.

In order to explore this further, we made Slime and Oobleck! These are fantastic examples of Non-Newtonian fluids because when moved quickly they behave like a solid and when allowed to move slowly, they exhibit the qualities of a liquid.

Students had a wonderful time testing these qualities and whilst some were a little disturbed by the sensation and visual gooeyness, others relished the opportunity to get their hands messy.

Once each lab team had created their Slime and Oobleck samples, they conducted a series of consistent experimental investigations and recorded their results. They were able to identify which state of matter each quality typically belonged to and why they thought their substances were able to behave in such a way on a molecular level.

This lesson left no doubt in any student’s mind; that Science is the coolest subject of them all!

Rookie Band Debut Performance.

On Tuesday 26th March the Rookie Band performed their first concert in the Ion Whykes theatre for all of their parents. They have only been learning their chosen instrument for just six weeks before this concert! They sounded great and should all be very proud of their achievements.

They will now be working towards the next school concert on Monday 17th June where we will showcase all of the music students in the school.
