Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids
On Thursday the 22nd and Friday 23rd of October, 8 girls ( Lucy Skelton, Audrey Habib, Polly Jane Decker, Annie Umseher, Monique Burns, Natasha Montemurro, Claudia Junge and Thirumagal Arunachalam Elanthendral) from Year 7- 10 attended the annual Melbourne Water Kids Teaching Kids Conference. With the help of Mr Vance and past student Gina Handby, we presented a 40minute workshop twice to large groups of primary and secondary students on the first day at Etihad Stadium. The theme for the conference was “Water is Life”, so the workshop focused on water as well as renewable energy and what MGC was doing to look after the environment. After visiting other workshops and listening to inspirational talks by many different experts, we finished the day with a lovely hot chocolate! No plastic cups of course! Three of our girls (Claudia, Lucy and Thirmagul) were interviewed by Channel Ten's Mike Larkin (Weatherman) about our experience so far! The girls were interviewed live as part of the weather segment and did a great job of representing our school. Then we attended a Gala Dinner at Etihad Stadium and got all dressed up for a wonderful night of dancing and watching other schools’ environment videos. Before the Dancing, Thirumagal, Lucy and Polly spotted the Deputy Premier and Education minister, MP James Merlino and went to discuss the great things we were doing for the Environment at MGC. Day two was at Collingwood Children’s Farm and we did many hands on activities like feeding the animals, learning from another school about hydroponics and how much water household items use in the production process. Monique got to meet the Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and water MP Lisa Neville and was asked to plant a tree next to her for a photo! Overall, the conference was a fantastic experience and we all learnt so much! A big thank you to Mr Vance and Gina for all their help, as well as Places Victoria for their sponsorship.
