Secondary 11-12

SAP

Our class has had a busy few weeks getting used to the new set-up of working in one class for most of the week. Community Connections is the umbrella for our section’s learning this semester and we have had a visit to Diamond Valley Secondary College VCAL students and our students enjoyed a BBQ, talking and playing footy with their students. We hope to work with them on projects throughout the semester.

We have taken responsibility for running the whole school canteen for our school community. This provides us with practical ways to achieve Work Related Skills VCAL outcomes. To make sure we are complying with the strict OH&S hospitality rules, new aprons and catering hats are now being used.

There are also two new hot items of food available in canteen. (see the pictures below)

Potato and bacon bake and a vegetarian option of fried rice. Try them soon!

We are also responsible for the VISY collection around the school and our class uses tables to check classes and work independently.

Visits to the city on Fridays are providing opportunities to develop appropriate adult behaviours in different situations, learn travel skills and increase confidence being independent. Many of our class are already travelling back from the city independently, which is really encouraging as many will have to do this in the near future as they leave school.

We are working toward becoming adults and all the great things this involves.

SSJ

SSJ have been lucky enough to have three awesome teachers this year, Jodi, Elise and Sam.

The students have adjusted well to the Applied Learning Program timetable and have enjoyed participating in a range of learning activities including; Macleod YMCA, Integrated Healthy Living, Post School Options visits to Araluen Diamond Creek, contributing to the Mile Room display in the Discovery Centre, work skills at Kevin Heinze as well as structured literacy and numeracy sessions.

During a recent visit to Kevin Heinze Garden Centre SSJ were excited to discover that the plants from the 2016 class had grown over the summer, and students were able to harvest tomatoes, large green beans and a gigantic zucchini. The zucchini measured 50cm in length and we think it will be large enough to make zucchini fritters, zucchini muffins and vegetable bolognaise.

We can’t wait to use our fresh produce from the garden as part of our integrated cooking program.

SHJ

In Term 1 Students of SHJ have been involved in the Sport VCAL program.  Hayley and Jodi have had all the students busy with a weekly sports and activity program at Macleod YMCA, Community Contract at two local churches to help clean, Integrated Health & Wellness program catering towards learning to cook simple healthy recipes and multiple sporting clinics to test each of the students of SHJ.

Each of these activities has challenged our students to apply their knowledge and experience and to develop new connections that help them achieve their learning outcomes.

Students this term have been involved with developing their own sporting clinic for classes in the school and have established connections with other local schools to run their own activities.
