Shrove Tuesday & Ash Wednesday

Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday (sometimes known as Pancake Day) is the Tuesday before

Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. It's a day of celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent begins. Traditionally we eat Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.

Traditionally Lent is a time of giving things up. Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to use up all the butter, fats and eggs that weren't allowed to be eaten during Lent.

Shrove Tuesday at Sacred Heart

On Shrove Tuesday we will celebrate as a school and enjoy pancakes. Students will be asked to provide a gold coin donation which will be donated to Project Compassion.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. On this day we begin our 40 day Lenten journey to Easter. On Ash Wednesday we bless the ashes and make a sign of the cross with them on our foreheads. The ashes are made from the palms which were blessed on Palm Sunday last year as part of the Holy Week celebrations.

We will have a special liturgy on Ash Wednesday at Sacred Heart School where we will all receive the ashes. The ashes are an ancient symbol of repentance. The signing with ashes reminds us that we make wrong choices with our words and actions and for this we are sorry. It challenges us to live our lives the way Jesus taught us to.
