Premier's ANZAC Spirit Award

Congratulations to Vinka Lakic (Year 10), who has been announced as an awardee in the 2022 Premier’s ANZAC Spirit School Prize competition. More than 600 students took part in the competition this year, with twenty students winning an award.

This competition was established in 2007 by the State Government in conjunction with the South Australian branch of the RSL. It aims to encourage young South Australians to recognise, empathise with and maintain the ANZAC Spirit.

The prize is open to all Year 9 and 10 students in South Australia. Those who participate are required to identify, research, and write a report about a serviceman or woman on active service from either World War I or II, and to demonstrate how that person embodied the ANZAC Spirit. It is an expectation of the competition that participants study a lesser-known individual from one of these conflicts, i.e. a person whose experiences have not been a focus of significant publication in the past.

Vinka spent months researching the life and military service of her subject. Once her research was complete, Vinka had to summarise her findings in a 1500-word essay, showing evidence of engagement with historical sources. In addition, she had to write a 500-word reflection explaining her research process, followed by a 500-word statement about herself detailing community involvement and historical interests.

Vinka based her entry on the life and service of Michael Cetinich, a Yugoslavian immigrant who contributed greatly to the Yugoslav immigrant community in Broken Hill. Michael enlisted in South Australia, serving in the 7th Military District, 2/43rd Battalion, 21st Australian Works Company and 5th Works Company during World War II. He was based in Darwin and endured the bombing of the city by the Japanese in February 1942. He later fought in Bougainville during the latter stages of the war.

Vinka submitted her entry in May and will attend a ceremony in November where she will be formally recognised for her achievement by the Premier. She will also attend a 12-day study tour to Darwin and the Top End of Australia in April 2023 to coincide with ANZAC Day.

The College congratulates Vinka on her award. In coming months we look forward to hearing more about the preparations she will be making prior to undertaking the study tour. As a College, we have been fortunate to have enjoyed success in this competition in recent years, with winners in 2019, 2020 and 2021. To have another winner named for a fourth year in a row is indeed a great honour.

We are proud of Vinka and her wonderful achievement.

Year 7/8 Football

Tuesday proved to be a great day of football for the College. Both the boys and girls Year 7/8 squads represented the College well and displayed great efforts of skill and sportsmanship. The boys second team showed improvement throughout the day and had some great celebrations after some personal bests with goal kicking. The boys Gold Team showed excellent skills and teamwork, undefeated all day in the minor rounds until the grand final , unfortunately going down by 4 points to Kings Baptist Grammar School.

For the Year 7/8 Girls team the day started off with a few unlucky losses. However, their luck changed against Temple Paralowie where we recorded our first win for the day. Lauren Crowe and Annabel Norris were standouts up forward, linking up multiple times to kick 4 goals between them. This game saw our team really come together and enjoy their successes.

After this confidence boost the girls played well, going down to the top two sides by a small margin after tough games. This was a great credit to the team’s defense, especially Louise Russell for helping lead the way from full back. The girls found victory again against Hope College where all Endeavour forwards and midfield stood out, putting us in 6th position.

Our final game to finalise 5th and 6th position was against Cedar College who each year proves to be a tough rival for our girls’ team. In a true display of perseverance the girls come out with the win after being down at half time. Mandy Pitt, the team’s captain was a brilliant asset in this game, especially after playing the whole day without a break from midfield. The girls finished in 5th position out of 8 teams and should all be proud of their efforts.
