From the Boarding Captains

This term within the boarding community we have been very busy with the Quiz Night, Radio Active, Country Week, Kingfisher Concert and sport grand finals. As always, the Quiz Night was an amazing night filled with laughs, smiles, fundraising and some amazing prizes for some many different categories. Without the amazing organisation of Mrs Franzinelli these events wouldn’t take place.

This year we have had many boarders involved with in the music program and boarding was also lucky enough to get tickets to Radio Active and Kingfisher Concert. These two concerts are the main highlights in the music calendar, and it is amazing to see the boarders get behind this. Getting on that stage is incredibly nerve racking so having your fellow boarders out in the crowd can make these nerve calm down.

Also, this term we had the privilege of going to Country Week, we actually made it past Arthur River this year and had an amazing week in Perth testing our sporting abilities against other country schools. It is amazing to see so many boarders go to this event and on behalf of all of us, thank you for an amazing week.

Last weekend and the weekend before we have had the winter sport grand finals. This time of year is always stressful getting the peak performance for the season and hoping to come out with that shiny medal around your neck. I would just like to say congratulations to all the boarders who managed to get their way into finals and grand finals and commiserations to the boarders who didn’t and hope you can have a crack next season.

Over the past few weeks something that has been a huge discussion through the senior houses and especially the Year Twelve students, is graduation. We all have so many mixed emotions to this amazing yet scary change we are all about to experience. This year being the Boarding Captain has taught me so much from organisation to doing interviews to having to awkwardly go and speak in front of a bunch of people because I have been put on the spot, and yes I am writing this article at 10.30pm on a Sunday night because, yes, once again, I needed to be more organised.

I would just like to say a big thank you to Pierce Newman, Brendan Quick, Darcy Barrett and Hamish Medway. I wouldn’t have been able to make it through his year of leadership without you and let alone by myself. Half of the time these guys reminded me about meetings and doing things such as the quiz night teams. I just want you to know how much I appreciated having you around to help with everything 'leadership' this year.

Madison Smart | Boarding Captain

My name is Hamish Medway, I am the last Boarding Vice Captain for 2022. I come from a farm near the small town of Varley located 400km from Albany. I have been a boarder at GSG since Year Seven and have had many great experiences and made many new friends.

This term, as Boarding Vice Captain, I was able to attend the Australian Boarding Schools Association (ABSA) Future Leaders' Conference. This meeting was held with other boarders from across Australia and other countries such as India and New Zealand. We learnt through many different presenters how to become the best leaders in our boarding communities, I would highly recommend this for any upcoming leaders.

Last Sunday, the Years Ten and Eleven boarders had the pleasure of planning and hosting a Farwell dinner for the Year Twelve boarders, as for some of them, this is the last time they will be in boarding. The night was a great success as the Dining Hall was transformed into a formal hall with everyone dressing up in 'Op Shop Formal' outfits. A big thanks to Chef Nick Harvey and Mrs Sue Wolfe for preparing the buffet style feast as well as the dessert bar.

I hope you all have an enjoyable and safe holiday and I look forward to handing over to the new Boarding Captain for 2023, when we return in Term Four.
