Religious Education News

Andrew May  -  Religious Education Coordinator

In St Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, he wrote that the Church has one body that is made up of many parts. This is especially true in our school. We are blessed to work with so many students from so many different backgrounds and with so many varied life experiences. One of the purposes of faith education and formation is to help students understand and value their own life journeys. Just as Jesus chose and valued Disciples from an incredibly diverse range of backgrounds (fishermen, businessmen, tax collectors, religious zealots, old and young, male and female), we too seek to help students understand that they are all equally valued and cared for.

This week Year 9 and 10 students have participated in retreats, engaging in activities that helped them understand the qualities that make them unique, precious and valued. Both retreats were filled with laughter and challenges and despite the less-than-welcoming weather,  all students rose to the occasion and made each retreat a great success.

Our new student leaders were recognised and commissioned in a liturgy on Friday. For the first time Year 10 students were also included in this process.

A new initiative this term is the provision of support to the Special Religious Education program in state schools. Year 10 students will be supporting catechists providing Religious education to students at Ben Venue and Martin's Gully Primary Schools. A huge thank you to those students who have volunteered for this and their families who have supported them.

Religious Education is not just a subject at O'Connor. It is an ongoing process of faith formation and awakening students to the spiritual nature of life. Just as education does not cease when a student leaves school, neither does the process of faith formation.

Keeping in touch with what is happening in the Cathedral Parish is easy through their website and Facebook pages.

With such a difficult year and a half it has been harder for parishioner's to give to the parish through the plates, particularly when the church is closed as it is at present. The Parish account details are available on the Parish bulletin.
