Indigenous Literacy Day 7 September 2022 and the UNESCO’s Decade of Indigenous Languages

In the Library we celebrated Indigenous Literacy Day. This year the theme was “a celebration of the diversity of First Nations Peoples' Stories, Cultures and Languages.” In the Library, McCarthy students watched the live screening of the National Digital Event. This event shared stories, cultures and languages in three different languages including Gamilaraay Yuwaalaraay.  Indigenous Literacy Day 2022 coincides with this year being the first year of UNESCO’s Decade of Indigenous Languages. This is a decade where communities across the globe focus on preserving and revitalising Indigenous languages.

McCarthy Languages Day

Along with these two events, McCarthy Library has also been celebrating and promoting our Languages Day now that our CBCA Book Week 2022 is finished.  Our Languages Day celebrates the Indigenous and non-Indigenous languages shared with and spoken by members from our College community.  We have fantastic displays of books written in a language other than English and other cultural items brought from home by our students and staff.  We have been inviting everyone to come in and see the displays.  A big thank you from the Library team to those who have contributed and come in to have a look.
