Sport News

Mr Luke Caplick

A very different week of sport just gone and with the lockdown extended there will be no sport this weekend either. Plenty of unknowns but we are assuming all will be back to normal after our lockdown period is complete and we can forge ahead with our Term 3 sporting seasons. Being in lockdown disables us from getting together to train for our respective sports; however, Mr Price has put a number of generic workouts on the College app under Strength and Conditioning to challenge us through the lockdown. I encourage you to participate in these to maintain your fitness levels during this period when we are unable to get together. If you maintain a level of fitness through this period you will be able to make the most of your talents when we return from lockdown.

Old Boys Excelling at the Olympics

Some of you might have already seen the Official College and Old Boys Facebook postings regarding Michael Bohl (1979) and Pietro Figlioli (2001), whom we are very fortunate to call MCA Old Boys.

These are a couple of exerts from the official Marist College Ashgrove and MCA Old Boys Facebook postings over the course of the Olympics:

Michael Bohl - The true class of multiple gold medallist Emma McKeon (7 medals) was shown by her gracious observation that she could not have done it without her coach, “Bohlie”. The same can be said of long-standing superstar, Emily Seebohm, who resurrected her career under his guidance.

Poetry to the Ashgrove faithful but also an appropriate recognition of the College's greatest ever swimmer and now Australian super coach, Michael Bohl.

Michael's humble nature and work ethic is reflected in the many outstanding champions he has produced and, more importantly, in the way they conduct themselves. The Bohl family’s generosity and compassion for the swimmers he guides is legendary.

The entire Ashgrove community salutes Michael for his contribution to Australian Swimming and congratulates his brilliant proteges on their performances in Tokyo.

Pietro Figlioli - was a student at Marist College Ashgrove for five years, graduating in 2001 and is a very proud Old Boy. He is a five-time Olympian, representing Australia twice in 2004 and 2008, and Italy three times in 2012, 2016 and 2021. Pietro is also a two-time world champion, having captained Italy to the last World Title in 2019.

The entire Ashgrove community wishes Pietro the very best when his team takes on Serbia in the quarter-final tomorrow night!

You may also recognise Pietro’s Opens Waterpolo coach… it's Dean Boxall! – Australian Swimming Coach of Olympic gold medallist, Ariarne Titmus!
