In Week 8, our Year 11 Geography and Legal Studies classes went on an excursion to experience their subjects in-field.

11 Geography

Joshua Barichello - On Friday of Week 8, the Year 11 Geography class ventured into the party centre of Brisbane, Fortitude Valley, for a day of intense data collection, led by Mark and Laura from the Brisbane Urban Environmental Education Centre. Over the course of the day, we gathered data for our field report focusing on planning sustainable places; where we will select a major issue within the Valley and ultimately suggest a multi-faceted solution to solve it. We will be transforming this data using Google Earth, Excel and Queensland Globe. Overall, a fun and informative day out for all.

Fun fact: Did you know that there are over 200 nightclubs and entertainment centres within the Brunswick Street mall precinct.

11 Legal Studies

James Fitzgerald – In Week 8, the Year 11 Legal Studies students took an excursion to the Supreme and District court in Brisbane’s CBD. Whilst there, the students spoke to Judge Jarro, A Marist old boy, who answered many questions, whilst taking on a tour of one of the courtrooms. The students visited both criminal and civil cases, where they gained more knowledge of the procedures of the court. The students then visited the Supreme Court Library, allowing the boys to take a deep dive into the depths of Australian and Queensland Law, with their many databases. This whole excursion interesting experience for all the boys, who were keen to learn more.

Raff Evans – In Week 8, the Year 11 Legal Studies class visited the Supreme and District Courts located in Brisbane CBD. Throughout the day, we investigated the Queensland judicial system and observed key legal processes. Justice Nathan Jarro, a Marist old boy and practicing judge, accompanied the class around a courtroom and educated us about how the court operates. We viewed a variety of real civil and criminal court cases which has allowed us to discuss countless legal concepts and incorporate these principles to our assignments.

Josh Oakhill – On Friday 11 June, the Year 11 Legal Studies class travelled to the Supreme and District Courts in Brisbane city. The day was packed with action with our class visiting the Supreme court library and courtrooms to listen to real-life open criminal and civil cases and learning how Queensland’s judicial process runs. Judge Nathan Jarro, Marist Old Boy, walked us around a courtroom and taught us about all the different items and seats inside a courtroom. He taught us about his life and gave us key information about varying legal concepts and processes. The day was one to remember and has given our class great insights and taught us many things. Queensland’s Supreme and District court is open to the public, so if you are interested in listening to some real-life cases, grab some mates and head inside.
