Visual Art News

Year 8 students have been developing artworks which show an awareness for the environment by repurposing discarded and found materials into sculptures of flying creatures. Two students were selected as joint winners of the “Artwork of the Month” for June. Congratulations to Henry Meinicke, for his owl and Andy Surtees for the ladybird he has produced.

We also congratulate Year 10 student, Hans Reimann who was awarded “Artwork of the Month” for the month of May for his ceramic spherical artform, inspired by Indigenous artist, Thancoupie, forming part of his practical folio for the current Year 10 unit, “The Edge” where students are exploring the intersection between the natural and the built environments.

In Week 8, Year 11 students were fortunate to have had guest speaker, John Graham, master collector of popular culture objects and collectables, who delivered a presentation about the art of collecting, which will inform their practical work in Unit 2 – “Art as Code.” Students are currently exploring how signs, symbols and codes are used in Art to visually communicate meaning and how a collection reflects a particular coded language that appeals to an individual’s aesthetic in different ways.
