Mr Luke Caplick

Over the past week, it was great to see so many boys out trialling for our Term 3 team sports of Tennis, Basketball and Rugby League. All information pertaining to these Term 3 sports can be found on the College App.

At our Sports dinner on Friday night we were very fortunate to have guest speakers and former Wallabies Tim Horan and Nathan Sharpe speak with the boys about the challenges and triumphs of their careers. A few humorous stories coupled with some words of inspiration for the boys capped off a memorable night for our 1st XV, 1st XI, Open Cross-Country and Chess teams.

Largely, these dinners have been a product of the work done by Brendan Furdek. Brendan has been an integral member of the Sports Department over the past 2 years, providing a level of organisation and support that we are extremely grateful for. Sadly, Brendan is moving into a job as League and Clubs Coordinator with the Queensland Rugby League after great success overseeing our Cross-Country and Cricket Programs. Brendan will still be involved as Assistant Coach of our 1st V Basketball in Term 3. We wish Brendan the very best as he progresses in his career.

Individual Achievements

As part of the Brisbane Roar Academy, Sam Keogan has been selected in the Football Australia Talent ID camp which will be held in Brisbane from Monday 5 July to Thursday 8 July. After leading the 1st XI Football team to AIC victory this is another wonderful achievement for Sam.

Last week Marist College Ashgrove students Matthew Magnussen and Jack Goyen competed at the Australian Olympic swimming trials.

Both boys did a great job, with Matt finishing in 14th place in 200m Backstroke and 45th in the 200m Freestyle. Jack competed in the 100m Freestyle, finishing in 76th place and 39th place in the 50m Freestyle.

I know both boys would have gained much experience out of these championships with the aim to come back in three years to hopefully fulfil their dream of making an Olympic Team one day.

We also had two members from the MCA swimming club compete at these trials in Hannah Casey and Lily Tomlinson. Hannah competed in the 100m Butterfly, 200m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle and 50m Freestyle. Hannah finished 12th overall in the 50m Freestyle. Lily competed in the 800m Freestyle and finished in 30th place.

Well done, Matthew, Jack, Hannah and Lily.

Swimming will continue in Term 3 in our ten-lane 50m Heated pool. This term will commence on Monday 12 July. Swimmers will need to be booked into classes. If you have any queries or questions about the swimming program, please email swim@marash.qld.edu.au or call 07 3011 1272.

Congratulations to Toby Bergh who was recently selected in the Qld Open Volleyball merit team after finishing as runner-up as part of the Met North Volleyball team. Met North didn’t drop a set all tournament until the final against Met East on the final day. Coach, Adam Knight (Head of Rush House, College Volleyball Coordinator), lamented going down in the final after a tightly fought contest.

Well done to Jonah Titifanua and Declan Tunny who also won silver as part of the Met North U/15 Volleyball team at the State Championships. The U/15 Met North team was also undefeated until the final.

On Saturday Harry Prole, Jack De Maria and James Garden competed in the Queensland Cross Country relay championship and got a Bronze in the U/12 Boys.

MCA was well represented at the 2021 Australian Little League Championship this past week. Lachlan Pawsey (Year 7) and Quinn Lovering (Year 6) represented Brisbane in division 1, while Sam Robertson (Year 7), Leo McKenna (Year 7) and Sammy Plumb (Year 6) represented Brisbane in division 2. Division 1 finished 5th in the country (equalling the best ever result for Brisbane at the tournament) while division 2 took home the silver medal finishing 2nd in a nail-biting final against Hills (Sydney), going down 7-6.
