Student Voice

“Student voice is giving students the ability to influence learning to include policies, programs, contexts and principles.”

– Harper, D. (2000). Students as Change Agents: The Generation Y Model. Olympia, WA: Generation Y

In just under two weeks the College will launch a week long program of self and peer awareness, and community action.  Student voice and agency have been prevalent in the strategic and operational planning for a wide range of activities designed to educate and engage both students and staff. Included in the naming as well as planning for the week have been students from the Student Representative Council, Diversity Club, Year 11 VCAL, Year 12 VCAL and Culture Club. Look for the launch on Monday, August 23.

Period Care Initiative

Özlem has been working closely with school nurse Ms. Anna Syposs and Ms Sophie Jamieson, DET Senior Policy Officer who is responsible for the Menstrual Hygiene Initiative in Schools. The initiative has been to change the absorbency of pads and tampons provided in schools to reflect the needs of a diverse group of students.

A positive outcome is that the department has commissioned an independent evaluation of the initiative that will run over two years and will monitor demand for the sanitary products.

Özlem and her subcommittee will be placing posters and sign-up sheets around the school showcasing this proposal and normalising period care through healthy discussions at school. They also seek the opportunity to visit different school clubs at lunch time and to present the campaign.

Orange Building Study Space

Layla, Fenet, Adithya and Özlem have been working closely with the year 9 and 10 team in the development of a study space that will be accessible at Lunchtime and after school for students. This week they are focusing on receiving student feedback and preparing for their upcoming meeting with the year level leaders. The vision for the space is something akin to the Yellow Building version.
