Learning and Teaching

This week, we continue our snapshots of learning from each of the Learning Communities at Corpus Christi School. The spotlight this week is on the Year 1 and 2 Learning Community.

Over the past few weeks, the children have been learning about persuasive texts. The Victorian Curriculum English states that students learn how texts are structured to achieve particular purposes, including how language is used to create texts that are cohesive and coherent and how texts about more specialised topics contain more complex language patterns and features. They learn how the author guides the reader/viewer through the text through the effective use of resources at the level of the whole text, the paragraph and the sentence.

What are Persuasive texts?

Persuasive texts use convincing language to make the audience or reader agree with the author's point of view.

In Reading the Year 1 and 2 children have been reading picture books with persuasive language and structures in them like I Want a Pet, The Day the Crayons Quit, Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type and Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus (click on the links to listen to and enjoy the stories).

After discussing the language features of persuasive texts, the children began writing their own texts. They started with choosing a pet that they felt was the best pet. They needed to think of reasons as to why they think that pet was the best and then compose their writing piece. Over the next few weeks, the children will continue learning more about persuasive writing and use checklists to help them to improve their writing pieces.  Check out their work so far below:
