Wakakirri Dance Competition

After a successful first run at the Wakakirri Story Dance Competition in 2018, which saw CHS performing at the Awards night, we are doing it again in 2020!

Please come to an important information session to learn all about how you can get involved as performers, designers, choreographers, directors, lighting and sound operators on Friday the 14th of February in 'The Space' (BU07) at 1.45pm - 2.05pm)

Everyone welcome! Come along, even if you are just a little curious

What is Wakakirri?

The Aboriginal word Wakakirri means ‘to dance a story’ according to the Wangaaypuwan people from Cobar NSW.

Wakakirri is Australia’s Largest Performing Arts Event for Schools. Each year hundreds of schools across Australia create Story-Dances for Wakakirri that reflect student’s thoughts, ideas and aspirations. These stories are performed in professional theatres in front of the official Wakakirri Panel who are searching for ‘Story of the Year’.

A Wakakirri Story-Dance is a 3-7 minute performance by a group of students that theatrically tells a story using a combination of dancing, creative movement and acting to pre-recorded music. Schools can tell any story and use any combination of dance, acting, music, sets, props and costumes. The possibilities are endless!

Performing in Wakakirri is an experience students never forget. Schools spend Show Day rehearsing and meeting other schools and that same night walk the Red Carpet with the Panel Reps and perform on the big stage.

Instrumental Music Program

Thank you to students and families who have submitted enrolment forms for the 2020 CHS Instrumental Music Program. We are looking forward to another wonderful year of making Music at Coburg High!

Our Instrumental Music Teachers will commence Instrumental lessons in Week 2 or Week 3 and students’ Instrumental lessons will be scheduled on Compass during Week 2, so please keep checking. IM teachers will collect any ‘missing’ students for their first lesson.

Students who have elected to undertake Group lessons will meet with our Specialist IM Teachers, who will allocate students to groups based on student ability and experience.

Families who have not yet returned their IM Enrolment Forms and/or paid Semester 1 fees should do so ASAP, as places in the Program are limited and priority will go to students who have fully enrolled by the due date. Enrolment Forms have been emailed out to existing (2019) students who have not yet returned them.

We are all looking forward to seeing the Music Department back in full swing!

VCE Masterclasses

A list of all master classes for Year 12 (and possibly Year 11 Students) is being compiled and will be distributed shortly. Master classes offer students a chance to build knowledge, ask questions and debate topics beyond the usual scope of class material. For subjects such as English, with multiple teachers, there may be panel discussions and debates, for example: "Was Truman Capote in love with Perry Smith and if so, how does that affect the reader’s interpretation of the truth in the text ‘In Cold Blood’?"

Homework Club

Every week seemingly ordinary school teachers are transformed into superheroes who volunteer their time to work with students in homework club. Why pay for a tutor when you can come along, get some work done and ask teachers from different subjects advice on how to complete home learning tasks, classwork and also extension work. They may even be some popcorn involved at some point. Ground floor of Building C Every Monday after school 3:15pm - 4:00pm.
