Year 12 News - VCAL

VCAL and the Hunt Club Retirement Village

During 2020 the Year 12 VCAL students will work with the Hunt Club Retirement Village. This is the third year that we have undertaken this project. Students begin in Term 1 by building friendships with the residents. In Term 2 students interview residents and learn from the wisdom of their lives. In Term 3 students build upon their relationships with these generous men and women by writing the residents biography and present this to them at an afternoon tea.

This year long journey began on the 20th of February with our first group of VCAL students organising a BBQ lunch, this was followed up on the 10th of March with the Year 12s making a pancake breakfast for the residents. This also involved a tour of the Retirement Village, a game of pool and some vigorous conversation. The students walked away very energised and looking forward to future visits with our friendly and amazing local retirement community.

VCAL Li’l Coffee Shop

In 2020 our Year 12 VCAL students will operate the Li’l Coffee Shop, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday throughout the school term. Through participation in this process students have the opportunity to learn about operating a business, which includes skills such as OHS regulations, Barista Skills, Book Keeping, ordering, service and sales. These are all great employability skills to take into the future. Students work in teams of three each lunch time, one taking ordering, one taking on delivery and one conducting the Barista role. Teachers are there for guidance and support, but this enterprise is completely student driven. Students have now been operating for 5 weeks and I have it on expert authority that they make a great coffee and hot chocolate. Students are about to expand their business starting with a digital ordering system.
