Year 9/10

Message from Assistant Principal

As we near the end of Term 1, I have been thoroughly impressed with the pride students have taken with their learning, attendance, uniform and behaviour. I have enjoyed visiting classes in the past few weeks and found students happily engaged with their education and producing a high standard of work. Please remember that Term 2 sees the winter uniform being worn.  Please use the term holidays to purchase any required items.

This term has seen the Year 9 students being busy undertaking P2S activities which includes completing their first City Experience where students attended the Melbourne Magistrates Court, completed related activities and a scavenger hunt in the surrounding area. Year 9 students also completed their Morrisby assessment and interview. In addition, students attended the Mock Interview as part of their P2S Assessment. It was pleasing to see the majority of students “dress to impress” and take the interviews seriously. I would like to thank Annabel Bond for all of her organisation and planning to make the 1st Term of P2S such a success for the Year 9 students.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable break and I look forward to seeing you in Term 2.

Years 9 & 10 Assistant Principal

Year 10

Year 10 students have had a busy start meeting the expectations of the year 10 teachers. Students are settled into their electives and new homegroups.

Well done to the students who represented the school for sporting events this year. It is fantastic to see so many students being actively involved in the school community.

We have students completing VET and Precal courses off campus this year. This requires an amount of independence and organisation from the students. Keep up the good work of proudly representing your school year 10s!

Congratulations to the students nominated by their classmates to be class captains. We all look forward to you all running assemblies and organising year level events in 2020.

Year 9 City Experience

On the 21st 23rd and the 24th of February, Year 9 students participated in going to the city for Humanities. Students met with peers and teachers at the Cranbourne train station at 8-oclock and this gave students and teachers 23 minutes to get their names marked off, top up their Myki cards and relaxed before the train ride.

Students went straight to the city and were respectful to others on the train offering their seats and their gratitude towards everyone. Once the train arrived students went in a single file line and went into the city leaving the train station. Once everyone was together the teachers led the students in front of a court to tell them what was going to happen on the day. Students were told to go to the  Immigration museum, the State library, and then to see a court case in the Magistrates' court.

On this day students were shocked by some of cases they saw, for example when a Vietnamese individual was framed for cannabis and deported for overstaying thei visa. Students behaved well, everyone was pleased with the day and would do it again.

Year 9 Mock Interviews

Following a successful start to year 9, students have been provided the opportunity to learn how to thrive in the workplace. Not only has this term’s learning been circled around the importance of careers, but also how to improve their chances concerning the application and interviewing process of a job. Various aspects have been covered such as the appropriate formal wear when arriving for an interview, polite verbal and non-verbal gestures. Once taught, students have been able to apply this in a practice mock interview. These interviews were put in place in order to prepare for a formal mock interview in the coming weeks. During this interview, students are to be assessed on their choice of clothing and how well they verbally present answers to similar questions in a real job interview. A few examples of the questions asked include:

  • What are your strengths?
  • What makes you the best for this position?
  • Can you provide an example of when you have shown initiative and how that may be applicable within this job?

Along with answering these questions, it is also important to introduce yourself and pay attention when speaking with the employer. Being able to overcome small gestures that may display nervousness or uncertainty are an important part of taking part in an interview.  Examples of these could be lack of eye contact, fidgeting, a slouched back, etc.

In terms of the choices of clothing, it is recommended that boys attend wearing either a suit or button up top and dressy pants. For girls, a dress with a jacket, or a skirt and blouse is suitable.

- Will Richards, Year 9 Captain

Good luck with the interviews!
