Term 2 Sport

Winter Sport

Basketball – All year levels took part in this year’s winter sport Basketball competition, with some very good results being recorded. Our intermediate boys and junior boys finished 3rd in their respective groups, only narrowly missing the opportunity to progress to the Hume finals.

Our intermediate and junior girls teams fought on all day against very strong opposition. It was great to see their determination and perseverance, especially as many of them had no prior experience of basketball.

Volleyball – Our senior girls Volleyball team competed in the Hume Region championships during Term 2.  Against very strong and experienced opposition, our team more than held their own to record a 3rd place finish; a great achievement.

Clay Target – As part of our winter sport program, students are given the opportunity to try sports they may never have in the past. One such sport is Clay Target Shooting. The day is run by the Shepparton Sport’s Shooters association at their range in Dhurringuile. This year we sent students from Year 7 to Year 12. All who attended had a great experience and a number of good results were achieved. Opportunities such as these are wonderful experiences for our students who choose to take part.

Cross Country – During Term 2 our annual cross country event was held. Along the banks of the Goulburn River, our students ran for house glory and personal achievement.

Congratulations to the following students who were named Age Champions.

13 Year – Sakineh Sharifi & Hassan Alhilfi

14 Year – Olive McKenzie & Lachie McCully

15 Year – Amy Lyle & Alex Stewart

GMDSSV Cross Country – McGuire College sent a strong contingent to the Zone Cross Country Championships, finishing in second place overall. Noteworthy performances included 3rd place finishes for Hassan Alhilfi and Jonathan Safari.

Hume Cross Country – McGuire managed to qualify 16 students for the Hume Region cross country championships, held at the Winton Raceway in late Term 2. Although the terrain didn’t suit our athletes they all battled on strongly. Special mention must go to Jonathan Safari who became our first state qualifier in many years but also managed to do so with one shoe, having lost the other in a mud hole on his first lap!

State Cross Country – Jonathan Safari became our first state cross country representative in many years, competing in the 5km 17-20 year age group. The event was held last Thursday, 19th July at Bundoora Park in Melbourne. The competition at State level is fierce and Jonathan was up against it, but as usual his determination and never say die attitude saw him complete the course in 19 minutes and 16 seconds, faster than his qualifying time at Winton.  A fantastic effort by a great competitor! Well done Jonathan!

AFL – Both our girls and boys entered teams in their respective AFL competitions last term, with our intermediate girls being the inaugural McGuire Girls football team!! Despite both teams facing very strong opposition, neither team’s players gave up, determined to show our McGuire spirit.

The boys team competed in the Sun Country Cup, a state wide tournament, seeking to progress to the next level. Unfortunately we came up against the Goulburn Valley Grammar powerhouse, who used all of their size and experience to dominate the contest. However, it must be mentioned that our boys never shirked a contest, nor took a backwards step.

The intermediate girls team played a round robin fixture at Kialla Recreation reserve and despite being very inexperienced, grew as a team throughout the day, recording their best effort of 3 goals in the last game of the day. It’s great to see our girls competing in football and being the trailblazers for their junior counterparts for the years to come. Well done girls!

Finally, our Year 7 Boys soccer team competed in the GMDSSV competition last Wednesday, completely dominating the competition and running out Year 7 champions, winning their way through to the Hume final, to be held on the 16th of August. I was personally impressed with their selfless team play which saw them leave their ego’s at school and demonstrate time after time what it means to be part of a team. If they are able to replicate this level at the Hume finals, I have no doubt they can give a good account of themselves.
