Intensive English Centre

ASC has been establishing an Intensive English Centre (IEC) over the past two years. It is an essential part of the region's refugee re-settlement program and adds value and diversity to our school and broader community. We started with two students in 2018 and have now grown to over 100 in 2020.

The students work their way through the Intensive English Program Curriculum Framework and engage with all aspects of schooling in preparation for entry into mainstream classes, usually within 12 months of arriving in Australia.

We have a student mentor system where students from mainstream classes volunteer to come and assist our students with learning English. This gives all of the students involved the opportunity to interact in a positive way whilst also giving the student volunteers a Certificate of Attainment at the completion of the program.

ASC mainstream students have impressed us with how they embrace and accept all students from different backgrounds. We pride ourselves on creating a school environment based on acceptance and equality. We feel that the IEC enhances the existing school culture.

The IEC has received a grant to purchase a class set of laptops. This came through the Local Schools Community Fund. The laptops will allow our students to learn about technology and access vital English language programs in the classroom.
