Ulysses Community Report

Term 4 Update

Ulysses have had a busy start to Term 4, we have been participating in the book fair and revising community expectations. Year 6 Graduation is coming up quickly and we are getting ready to say goodbye to our year 6 students in a spectacular fashion. Please stay tuned for upcoming notes so you don't miss out one anything.

Our Learning

Reading

We have been working on using information from the text along with our own experiences to understand how a character is feeling in a text.

Writing

We have been working on improving our spelling, grammar and punctuation when writing narratives. We have been enjoying using different prompts like pictures or videos to give us ideas for writing.

Maths

This month in numeracy Ulysses has been working on financial literacy. In groups we have worked together, learning about: percentages, adding and subtracting money, dividing and multiplying money and budgeting. We looked at online websites to figure out how to limit spending as part of a budget, for example: making a list of items to buy from JB HiFi online, with a set budget. We played Kahoot quizzes about Australian money with quick addition in dollars and cents as well as figuring out how much change is given in shopping situations.

SEL

In SEL our community have been working on respectful relationships. We have come up with our top 7 values for what respect means to us, talked about how to cope with changing relationships, communicating assertively but not aggressively as well as managing conflicts in relationships. We also started to explore emotional literacy, for example: understanding body language and how to interpret other peoples’ mood based on this.

Inquiry

We have begun to investigate 'Why People Work' in our newest inquiry unit. Students have been looking at different careers as well as different motivations for work and the difference between paid and unpaid work.

Home Learning

In years 5 and 6 the aim of homework is to build on the concepts of self-discipline, responsibility and initiative to prepare students for secondary school.

Homework tasks will consist of daily independent reading and spelling or unfinished classwork. Next term assignments, essays and research may be sent home.

Students are generally not expected to spend more than 45 minutes per day on homework and no homework tasks will be assigned over the weekends or during the holidays.

Important Notes to Remember

* Doors open at 8:40am and class begins at 8:50am, students who arrive after this time are required to get a late pass from the office.

* If parents would like to speak with community teachers please make an appointment via the office

* Students should be reading nightly with the title and pages read to be recorded in their diaries.

* New spelling words go home each Thursday this term and will still be in student diaries. Students are expected to practise spelling for 10 minutes each night, if you need a list of ideas to practise spelling words feel free to see Bec Thursday afternoons or email through Sentral.

* We are currently working on multiplication and division, practising times tables nightly will be a great support.

*  If you haven't yet purchased an iPad please look into doing so, it is an important learning tool. A list of iPad apps will be sent home shortly, in the meantime please remember to bring iPads charged and ready to go.

* Reports will be coming out in the final week of school

Kind regards,

Bec and Trent
