Positive Education

Head of Positive Education - Emily Murcott

During the holidays I spent a day with more than 70 teaching colleagues from a variety of schools in Maroondah discussing concepts of Positive Education, including new staff at Mullum Primary School.

As I left I dropped into a local supermarket to purchase a few items. As I approached the checkout the cashier called over a young man (who was returning trolleys to the trolley bay) and she commented that the previous customer had told her how polite he was and what a wonderful job he was doing moving carefully about he carpark collecting the trolleys.

The young man's face beamed and said, "Thank you, it's my job!" The cashier went on to say that she would tell her supervisor. He walked away with a spring in his step.

We continued a conversation along the same lines about kindness and gratitude. She mentioned that all week they had only received negative feedback from customers and how nice it is to hear that they were doing something positive.

I am sure you can all relate to this in your work environment and in your personal lives. Well, it made me think that we, at Mullum Primary, could spread some kindness and positivity amongst the community.  So, each class will come up with one "act of kindness" that the whole class can implement throughout this term which involves people outside of our community. I'm looking forward to sharing these with you throughout the term.

Captain of Positive Education

I'd like to welcome Victoria as the Captain of Positive Education for 2020. She is passionate about the wellbeing of students at Mullum Primary School and she has already approached me with some fabulous ideas for 2020 which will assist students to develop their understanding of themselves.

You will learn more about Victoria in the next newsletter.

What is bucket filling?

What is a bucket you may ask? The bucket represents your mental and emotional self. Everyone has  a bucket.

What is bucket filling? Bucket filling is when someone's actions or words warms your heart, puts a smile on your face or just makes you feel good on the inside.  By being kind to someone you are filling their bucket.

What are the benefits? Both the receiver and the giver of positive words or actions can benefit.   Here are a few examples of how it impacts both the giver and receiver:

When you give someone a hug, the receiver feels safe, calm and cared for. The giver also feels good as they experience positive emotions from their actions because the hug has been well received.

- When you compliment someone on their achievements, the receiver feels great because they are being acknowledged for their hard work and effort. The person who passed on the compliment feels good because they have done something nice for someone else.

Some examples of filling someone's bucket may include:

* Saying or doing something kind.

* Giving someone a heartfelt smile.

* Helping without being asked.

* Giving sincere compliments.

There are hundreds of wonderful ways to fill buckets. The language of bucket filling has become synonymous with being kind and thoughtful.

Who's bucket will you fill next?
